VCDS - OCTAVIA 3 vRS FL - Fog Lights with High Beam Lights

Featured Replies

Hi, sorry for Google Translate (I'm French....)
But I need help

--------------------------

Hello friends!

I own an OCTAVIA III (5E) FL 230cv (vRS) (end 2017)

I currently have a ROSS TECH cable and VCDS software version 18.9

I tried to activate the "Fog Lights with High Beam Lights" but that does not seem to work.

Can you help me?

Thank you!

That’s the one, I wasn’t sure if the FL coding was different. It’s a nice extra :)

Why is this a thing? Putting high beams on in fog surely does nothing other than completely remove any vision you might have had?

It’s an extra setting. It enables the fog lights to come on with the main beam. The fog light function works as it always did. For very dark roads (and there are plenty in my area) it’s nice to have the dogs on too with the high beam as I have LED lights installed. I can’t remember the last time it was foggy enough to need the front fogs as fog lights (still not a standard feature on many cars) so why not use them to get some extra light?

If it means the fogs come on and off in unison with high beams, that's understandable. I assumed it just allowed the high beams to be switched on if the fogs were already on.

It’s the former, the latter can already be done as standard, although as you point out, it’s not very useful when it’s actually foggy!!

That makes sense then

So, I tested and it works!
There is however one thing to change for my type of vehicle:

If you want to turn on the foglights only during "flash high beam lights":

In both cases, the fog lights function normally during manual activation.

Really sorry for the Google translation ...

Thank you @SashaGrace ! =)

Just out of interest, would it be an MOT failure to have the fogs come on when main beam is on? Before I bother to activate that setting.

thanks

Depends on the testers interpretation of the rules. I’ll be coding it off on my car before it goes in, just in case.

I've been trying to get my head around it and I reckon its probably ok. On cars pre 2018, there is no testing of front fogs as they weren't a requirement. There are rules governing the placement of spot (driving) lamps, but the front fogs fall within this. So you could argue they are front driving lamps. Only the beam pattern might cause an issue as fogs might be too wide. 80% is mentioned in the regulations, but I've no idea what that looks like.

Main beam flash isn't tested, so having the fogs flash with main beam should be fine.

I do not know the English regulations.
On the other hand, this is not a problem if the fog lights are activated manually.

it is illegal, full stop, because the lights are too low and may only be used in snow or fog. We've been through this recently with  @Jaco2k elsewhere. Main beam flash should be tested, I know they will prove it both ways for me.

@Adam642 "das verbreiten von Screenshots ist verboten" means no screenshots. Please remove them, I don't want to lose access to authoritative information.

What about cornering? It's clearly perfectly legal to have your fogs on then since it's a default setting on a lot of cars.

Found it. That's in a sperate EU regulation.

Main beam flash is not tested as part of the UK MOT test, only headlamp (and main beam warning lamp) operation and alignment is tested in the UK.

Oh and whether HID has been retrofitted to unsuitable headlamps (tested since May 2018).

On the subject of fog lights, why do the AFL headlights become fixed/static when the front fog lights are switched on?
