Like an idiot I did a run to the tip and put some long lengths of timber down the middle of the car and scratched the leather on the sliding arm rest, long shot but does anyone know if its possible to change the sliding lid only ? thanks  

Find a saddler/leather repairs online near to you, they should be able to repair the scratch. Have to say that because of the leather in mine I bought roof bars for this reason. It would annoy me intensely if I had done the same.

I am fairly sure it somehow slides - off.  Something tells me there is a captive screw keep the sliding part in place.
