Require ideas for tailgate grommet fix

Featured Replies

Hi,

Long story short, I ripped a hole in the boot grommet while wiring a reverse camera and dashcam.

Any ideas how I can ensure water doesn't seep in?

Installing a new grommet seems like a very involved job and I'd like it if I can just fix (fill?) this grommet instead.

Silicone RTB sealer; black, durable and sticks like ☆☆☆☆ :)

You could also try self-amalgamating tape, although it can get bulky if you use a lot.

Hi Mike,

Thanks. I'm looking for a solution where I can run more wires (or re-wire if needed) in the future. The RTB sealer seems like a permanent fix.

I will look into the self amalgamating tape :)

For now, I've wrapped it with electrical tape. The car will be on a road-trip this week-end and this is the only temporary fix I could come up with.

Just a point to remember about self amalgamating tape - it does not stick well to other things, only itself.

In industry it is usual to first wrap with pvc electrical tape, then the self amalgamating tape over the top and finally another layer of pvc or similar tape. Each layer is longer than the one before. Gives a long-life waterproof covering.

Thanks for the tip!
I have back to back road trips planned and there's tons of rain! I'm monitoring just the electrical tape for now and will get on with the self amalgamating tape.

Cheers
