Which is my alternator

Featured Replies

I am trying to determine the correct alternator for my Skoda Fabia 1.4 Petrol

When I have looked to buy replacement for my car there are several variants of alternators to choose from but they are different amps and voltage. How do I know which I should order. Can anyone help please.

We'll need to know which engine you have since there are three different versions of 2001 1.4 petrol engine available.

Does the battery light come on when you turn on the ignition?

Thank you for trying to help me. It had a new alternator recently and timing belt change. This was done by the previous owner prior as he knew it needed doing and agreed to our purchasing it. We know it is new. We have only done 200 miles over 2 weeks. We were only on a short journey across town when the battery light came on but went off again but there was a burning smell and whirling sound We stopped to take a look but decided to try to get it back home. The alternator was really really hot. We are wondering if the alternator is wrong. We did a multimeter check on battery which was 12 whilst not running and 14 when running so we don't think it is the battery not taking the charge. I thought to check which is the correct alternator. The person who sold the car is thinking that the alternator is faulty but it might be that it is the wrong one. Will the attached file help someone determine which is the correct alternator please.

Having experienced a failure in an exchange alternator before I'd say it's very likely. Contact the vendor to find out where the alternator was sourced, as it's very likely that supplier has a Consumer Rights responsibility to replace it.

The code 8GM on that sticker suggests that the factory original alternator was 70-Amp rated.   I would have thought that anything that fitted correctly would work though, unless faulty from new.

I can't say that it was an exchange as the previous owner brought it and a garage fitted it, also did a timing belt change and an MOT. He has found the invoice which has a warranty. He is going to get the alternator checked but I am concerned that the alternator might not show a fault but it could be the wrong ampage or vaults. I don't know if putting a wrong one on would result what is happening.

Thank you, I will find out what this alternator amp is.

AQW engine has no timing belt, so it must mean the timing chain.

Basically if an alternator physically fits correctly it will work, I'm also guessing that the auxiliary belt was replaced at the same time since that engine doesn't have a timing belt.

Agreed. It can't be wrong voltage because you have observed 14V when running.

Alternator output current is demand-led so it will only ever supply what is needed (as far as it can), and should not overheat even at continuous maximum output, I think.

@sepulchrave @Wino Exactly guys, hence my recommendation that he gets in touch with whoever fitted the alternator. The only time I've ever experienced an alternator failure the symptoms were similar, and the failed unit was a newly installed exchange part.
