Service intervals!

Featured Replies

As I’m very fussy about servicing I decided to work out what’s going on with the MK4.

I’ve done 4700 miles and the car is saying oil change in 12,100 miles. I know this has changed as it was on about 14,000 until oil change when I first got it. Assuming this to be on a longer variable schedule I asked Skoda UK who say the car is on a flexible schedule up to 20,000 or 2 years. they said this couldn’t be changed to a fixed schedule, which I know you could do in the past. Personally I’d prefer more frequent oil changes.

How’s it looking for everyone else? Is yours on the same schedule?

I understand though that long life oil and modern engineering they should be ok

My dealer asked me about the service interval before I took over the car. Options were 15k or 30k km (not sure what were the time frames beside both distances. Since I was always changing oil from 10 to 15k km on all my cars and the fact I have a VRS, I went for the short interval.

@OllieOcty  If the car is on Variable / Flexible Servicing at 24months / 18,000-20,000 miles which ever comes first have the oil changed at 10,000 miles if you want.

It was called Minor & Major Servicing until about 2017/18 Skoda called it Interim Service & Major Service.

If at 10,000 miles when getting and Oil & Filter change some incompetent tech can not put the car on to Fixed Servicing then fine it is counting down to the service it shows now.

None of it is as complicated as Skoda or Dealership staff like to make it sound.

there is no such thing as long life oil.

i suggest to change oil every 10k km, if possible always before winter if you care about engine health and reliability.

Especially on RS petrol version.

It is a Skoda RS not a Porsche RS,

a cooking family car with nothing particularly special engine / power wise.

There is obviously Long Life oil.

The VW508 00 / 509 00  0w20 FS IV that the cars get filled at from the factory.

They do oil to VW502 00 if anyone wants to do Fixed Servicing and not use 'Long Life' oil which can be used for either fixed or flexible.

A 9,400 mile (10,000) mile Oil change is perfectly fine in the UK, even a 20,000 mile one.

Changing oil @ 10,000 km / 6,217 miles is just silly for a road car in the UK.

Particularly for the first service I am tempted to change the oil at 10,000 or 12,000 just because that feels right to me and I want to look after my engine. I guess that would count as one of my two included services...hmm

@e-Roottoot what doesn’t make sense to me  is why it’s 12,100 miles to an oil change and then only 15,200 miles to an inspection

If you have 2 services from a plan at 2 years and 4 years then fine, keep them.

Pay someone else to change the oil at 10,000 miles and do not reset the Service Indicator.

Or you buy an oil pump and change the oil & filter.

Have a professional look over the car if you are not doing it.

Are you keeping the car and having it at 4 years old?

There is no Oil Service & an Inspection Service at separate times / visits.  That is just Skoda nonsense.

When the Car is in for an Oil Change the Inspection,

pollen filter at 2 year and Software Updates, road test should be getting done.

@e-Roottoot appreciate your replies so far. I may keep it after 4 years but it depends how the car performs over that time I suppose, I’d like to treat it as if I am keeping it

It is lots of Kidology with Skoda.   Have your oil changed annually if you want it changed.

Ask what the 2 services you got in the cars purchase include unless you already have that in writing.

?

Are they doing @ 2 year & 4.?

So a Pollen Filter @ 2 years as an Extra.  Are they doing the A/C as per Manufacturers Recommendations.

No Brake Fluid at 3 years as per Manufacturers Recommendations.

@ 4 years are they including the Air Filter & Spark Plugs replacement. Are they doing the Pollen Filter & the A/C again.

Until 2020 this was Skoda UK Fixed Price Servicing as for 3-10 year old cars.

@e-Roottoot yeah I’m confused as to what I actually have now as I was going by what my cousin usually has, but he is on fixed. On my invoice I have VWFS 2yr /20k service plan for £159 so it sounds like I only have one service included

Sounds exactly like you got an Oil & Inspection Service at 24 months 18,000-20,000 miles.

I hope that includes the Pollen Filter.

There used to be a £99 Oil Service at the time of the Interim & Major Services Menu that i posted.

Up to you if you want to have that one service with them at 1 year / 9,400 miles or there about, or wait until the 2 years.

I would not wait 24 months to have a new car inspected,

but then a Skoda Dealership look see is not much of anything.

Thanks yes I’ll probably end up having it a bit early. I don’t like the idea of a new engine that’s just been run in having the same oil for ages. Whenever I see taxis for sale that have done silly miles they always show to have had regular services

The same oil runs it in just perfectly. The Oil filled at the Factory is used for that very purpose.

There are lots of people that do not actually understand what they are doing when changing the oil too soon.

It is not doing many miles or lots of short journeys with cold starts so the oil / engine is never getting up to a good temperature that is the issue.

PS

Lots of Taxis & Private Hire cars run night and day and are sitting ticking over so not doing lots of cold starts.

They do high miles and get regular checks and oil changes.

Lots of Reps (Travellers as they were)  'Salespeople' & others do high miles and are not putting cars into Dealerships every 10,000 miles, or 4 or 5 months as Variable / Flexible servicing is all that high mileage drivers need.

@e-Roottootso I do about 350-400 miles a week, quite a bit of that is longer journeys but there is also a fair few shorter journeys in there too. Quite varied really. Thanks for your help

If you read the brochure (smaller print near end) it actually says variable 9000-20000 miles.  So can be less than the fixed interval if you do lots of short journeys and hills.

However some parts (and MOTs) are at calendar intervals (multiples of 12 months), so for most people just getting it serviced annually is easier, especially as lots of people are 10+ miles (or 30+ minutes) away from nearest dealer so don’t want lots of little visits at random months

The inspection is a bit of a nonsense as that seems to use a date interval.   I don’t know anyone that sends their car in for an inspection and no service.  And every thing in an inspection is done in service anyway, it’s more of a light intermediate service

@SurreyJohn hi, I suppose it makes sense that it must be very variable as when I got it it was saying 13k to service, and based on miles travelled and what the indicator is saying now it will be over 16k by time it is serviced

Bang on mate , we dont have Bugatti's we have taxi cab faves with some of us having a look warm hot hatch engine. No manufacturer would give you this option if it F-d up the engine within the 3 years warranty.  So many old wife tales for cars that are still prevalent today
