Driver's side windshield wiper adjustment

Featured Replies

I have a RHD Karoq and the driver side wiper meets the edge of the windshield at a slight angel when it operates. I think there are 2-3 cm extra space between the wiper (where it stops) and the edge of the windshield and I wonder is it possible to adjust it to travel a bit more during the wiping.

Does it look the same for everybody else, is this normal?

In the attached pictures you can see the mark where the wiper stops.

I have a puller and I've seen videos on youtube how to take out and adjust the wiper arm, but I wonder is there any other (simpler) way - e.g. a screw somewhere that controls the travel and can adjust it couple of centimetres.

Isnt this lhd car? It does seem (pic from the inside of the car) that they need to “travel” a bit more…and i do reccomend to change wipers which came with the car..they’re rubbish..maybe because of poor rubber quality they have more friction!? I did replaced them with Bosch after 3-4 months.

Mine do the same as what your first picture shows. Original squeaky wipers and Bosch Aerotwins alike.

Your second picture seems to show a wider unwiped section, though.

Edit: Have just taken a measure and yes, the unwiped section width is an even 6 cm.

A lot, sure, but I wouldn't want the wipers to rest that much higher if that was the only solution.

The only way to adjust the travel is to take them off the splines and rotate them a bit. Shouldn't need much to decrease that unswept area, a couple of splines maybe. Also it shouldn't be difficult to do on a car as new as that.

Just bear in mind that the wiper can go further in some circumstance than indicated on your photo, if say it is catching on ice or jumping due to friction and springing over it at the side of the screen. Nothing worse than it hitting the edge Had this problem on a previous Yeti.

.

If you rotate the wipers on the shaft splines they'll park further up the screen, and at the end of the sweep the offending blade won't be parallel to the A pillar any more.

There's quite a good chance that its tip will go beyond the edge of the screen too.

One spline isn't much of a difference at the pivot point, but it translates to quite a lot 26 inches away at the blade end.

.

In heavy rain and on high speed I bet they go further, mine certainly do..

I tried to adjust the arm few times (attempting to move just a single spline) and the minimum adjustment I manage to do still pushes the wiper to the edge of the A pillar (as predicted). It does not touch the A pillar when the car is stationary, but it might touch it at a greater speed. Here is a video of the end result with the wipers turned on at maximum speed - https://youtu.be/K-RQsXVkimI

At the very least this wont work when there is snow fall, because there is no gap between the blade and the frame and the snow always builds up a bit.

I might try again later to hit this mythical single spline, just in case I have moved it 2 splines right now 🤷‍♂️

At the very least, the windshield is very clean this way :D

If the wipers are parked higher than as factory set, they may get caught and forced up by the rotating bristles on the auto wash line.
Happened to me with the previous Octavia. The wipers were in their original position, but the auto wash line was just opened and the bristles still new and stiff.

Er, that's only an issue if you use an aerial ripper and panel scratcher. And why would you when you can get a hand car wash or a snow foam and jet wash for £5 to £10 (UK)?

Update on the wiper arm adjustment: I succeeded moving the arm a single spline from its original position - now it is no longer reaching the end of the windshield.

The red line is my yesterday's adjustment that was way too close to the edge of the frame and the yellow line is the correction from today, which seems how the wiper arm should have been put together on the assembly line 😅
