Do I need a locking wheel nut key?

Featured Replies

Hi, some help please?

I recently bought a used MK3 octavia and it didn't come with a locking wheel nut key.  I'm just trying to work out if my wheels need one, I'm not sure they do from what I can tell.

Can any one confirm please?

I'd say no, it looks like someone's swapped the locker out for a normal wheel bolt. It doesn't look to match the rest though, so I might be tempted to drop that one that doesn't match out and make sure it's the right sort.

Thanks, where would be the best place to get something like that?  a dealership?

I also need to get a spare and toolkit.

It's a 2013 estate btw.

Thanks

Hi A, nut, not you, might get one local tyre fitter, they often have some just lying around.

Wheel and toolkit, ebay, or someone might have some on this or for sale site.

If you want locking nuts, get some McGuard or similar from anywhere or go to the dealer.

If you don't just buy 4 of the correct non-locking nuts from a dealer.

Locking wheel nuts are not particularly resistant to a determined theif, but as they are standard fit, I can imagine the case where an insurance company could have a problem if your wheels did get nicked and you didn't have them fitted.

The wheelnut covers are missing as well unless the cheapskates didn't fit them to your model.

Make sure that you still have an engine cover, undertray and any other bits that garages like to collect.

I would'nt  bother locking wheel nuts are a waste of time now ,wheels rarely ever get stolen anymore they just take the whole car .

I replaced my locking wheel nut with a standard one. The amount of times the wheels were off meant there was a danger the nut was going to get rounded out and pose a major ballache.

Not all Mk3 Octavias had an engine cover fitted at the factory, the 1.4 & 1.5 didn't so I fitted a VW one with a Skoda bonnet badge fitted to it.
