Noise from gearbox?

Featured Replies

54 plate vRS Fabia... 23k miles.

Noticeable when changing from 1st to 2nd, and from 2nd to 3rd, there's a noise and feeling through my clutch pedal - difficult to describe!

I guess you'd say it sounds mechanical, not really an obvious clunk, more a vibration or minor grinding... a passenger said they could feel it under their feet too!

It didn't used to do this when I bought it back in Feb... Just recently noticed it. It doesn't physically affect gear changes, and doesn't always do it. If I am really, really slow, deliberate and smooth with the gear change, it doesn't happen.

It's also just been in for its 20k mile service (had the problem before) and they didn't mention anything about it - am I trusting them too much to look out for such things? Or is it my erratic gear changing? :)

If it's lubrication related, what can I look at to check levels etc? Are there additives I can try - any recommendations?

Do garages test drive the cars when they do the service?

I guess I'll find out if this is terminal over the next week - planning to tour Snowdonia and N Wales in it! Now where is my AA card...?

You don't need a card Ducky! There's a freephone number what you 'phone, give them your reg number and they come and collect you. Even give you a hire car for 48 hours .

Assumes your car is under 3 years old......

The clutch is hydraulic and sometimes you can have the clutch pedal fully up but the cylinder/hydraulics are slow to react - hence sudden take up of the clutch at the last minute irespective of how carefully you let the pedal up. I had this for a while dealer adjusted I think and it stopped. If it doesn't stop after adjustment then new slave cylinder under warranty I'd say. Hope this helps it may or may not be this bit it certainly sounds similar - hope it is not gearbox!

Mr Duck, unless you pointed it out to the garage when it went in for the service then I doubt they would have noticed/checked.

Say that even when you ask them to check some garages still forget! if in doubt get it checked before you go away.

i also have a noise from my gearbox area on my 53 plate vrs only first thing in morning and on idle sounds like it is about to drop out i think mit is coming from the dual mass flywheel, but dealer can never here anything.i will let you know if it ever gets fixed.

sounds like the flywheel is beginning to go awol, the symptoms sound very similar to the same problem on the Tdi Octy ALH engine

tested vrs with dealer today flywheel has gone, only took 3weeks to find noise.new flywheel and clutch fitted tomorrow.
