Steering wheel airbag.

Featured Replies

I replaced the airbag in my Steering wheel. Fortunately both sets of thumb controls work fine but the horn is a non starter. Checked fuse - ok..

I’m a bit flummoxed now. Surely clockspring can’t be selective?
Or is the horn reliant on the resetting of error codes?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you checked for error codes?

Not yet I’m looking out for a decent (cheap) reader. I bought one for a 5 series BM I had and it was worth every penny. Holding on to it just in case.

Will that not work with the Yeti?

I’ll give it a go - be a bonus if it does. I’ll post results.

No joy it is an icarsoft which seems to be BM / Mini specific. I’ll have to bite the bullet and get another. Any suggestions as to make?

Thanks

No generic OBDII reader will give you data regarding the horn contacts being operative or not, you would need something like VCDS, Even a manufacturer specific reader like VCDS will give you the option of reading & resetting basic OBDII faukt codes on other manufacturers, they have all shared the same architecture for a very long time.

I dont think you could reset the airbag light with a basic reader anyway.

Why did you replace the airbag? If it was a deployment you will need to replace the airbag & SRS control module or send it away to someone who can remove the crash data, that should not affect the horn, there are 3 different connectors IIRC for the airbag, steering wheel controls and the horn contacts, I would unclip the airbag & check them all carefully, the horn connector will be the smallest one with only 2 cables.

I just checked the horn itself looks like it’s had a knock there’s a nasty little split in it.  Off to a Barbecue now.

Icarsoft reader givesva choice of series BM and mini nothing else but it turned my airbag light off when I replaced a roof curtain and door bag in my M sport.

Thanks again.

You need VCDS, there will be someone in the club in your vicinity who will usually assist for a drink.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I’d be delighted to cover expenses and a tipple or three.

There's a sub forum on Briskoda for VCDS queries, requests etc.

Further to airbag replacement / horn failure:

I spoke to the guy who reset my seatbelts who said that I didn’t need to send airbag ecu off to him  just get a reader on the car and cancel codes from the crash. I splashed out on an Autotophix 5600 specifically for VW group from Amazon for £72.00. Which worked a treat by reading and explaining all the error codes then cancelling the airbag light. Chuffed to bits with that..Nothing on the horn so I’ll persevere with that.
