overheating roomster

Featured Replies

This is my first post and I wondered if anyone can give me some advice regarding my 63 reg 1.2 TSI overheating all the time , I bought the car last December with 42000 miles on it ,but have hadn`t had a chance to give it a run until recently when I managed to go about 20 miles and that`s when it started to give me problems,I would appreciate any advice that anyone can give me regarding this problem

@buggsymo

Welcome to the forum.

What temp is the Gauge showing that the coolant is getting to and how soon after starting off does it get to an indicated 90*oC, then how high does it go?

Sorry if no help but you best have the car looked at by a mechanic.

They will have to diagnose why it is overheating.  Hopefully a minor issue easily rectified.

?

Have you checked the coolant and if so does it sit between MIN & MAX and is it a pinkish colour?

Part of the problem is there is no temperature gauge ,it`s a blue light only when it starts up,and after a few minutes that goes out and then when it starts to overheats, with no warning another light which is red and a beeping noise comes on and lets you know there is a problem ,so there,s no way to measure the temperature visually ,and the coolant is a pink colour, hopefully this will help you.

cheers

OK.

Are you sure then that the engine / coolant is overheating and that it is not a sensor giving a false warning/

I expect you are from opening the bonnet and feeling heat, seeing steam or something else.

It will need a diagnosis by a mechanic and if one not available then a Skoda Dealership tech might do.

No warning, not even a sound of an electric fan starting up? I've got an idea where to look maybe, but we need more to work from.

It is certainly overheating ,when I pop the bonnet the expansion tank is full of water and when I release some of the pressure the water boils out from the overflow pipe , but this can happen within 10 minutes of driving and if I do not release the pressure the next time I use the car the next day the warning light comes on straightaway and the tank shows low water ,then when I release the cap the water is forced out of the overflow pipe.

cheers

Can you try "answering the actual question that was asked" please? What you have told me instead is that your car has a pressurised cooling system, which I already knew. I have an idea about a likely fault, and want you to answer a question about your car that may well tell me if I am correct or not.

Sorry for the mixup ,i was replying to another post,No other warning except the temperature red light and beeping warning,  and no sound of the fan kicking in ,I`ve booked it in for tomorrw to be checked out, i`ll let you know the results then.

thanks for your help.

Thank you. I'd advise checking the fan motors and thermo-switches, because that means the fans aren't starting, and that in turn means either the fan fuse has blown or the motors or switches have failed. So:-

  1. Check the fan fuse(s) in the fuse box. It could be that simple. If that isn't the issue...
  2.  Run a direct wire from the battery negative terminal to the power terminal on one of the fans. If the fan now works, the issue is the thermo-switch, and it it doesn't then the issue is almost certainly the motor.

Does the aircon work? This will show that the fan is working

Probably too late as you suggested going in on Thursday, but an OBD2 adaptor and Torque App on an Android phone will report temperature.

To all of you who replied to my post regarding my Skoda Roomster ,I would like to say many thanks for your suggestions ,I took the car to a local garage that had a very good reputation , he had it all the day from 9am and phoned me around 4pm to tell me that after testing he had diagnosed that the head or the block was cracked and he had spoken to an engineer who said it wasn`t worth repairing because it was an aluminium head and block , so a quote for a replacement engine was in the region of £1500 and even then no gurantee that would be any good  he then refused to take any money whatsoever for all the time he had worked on the car whch I thought was very generous of him after all his time and effort ,so unfortunately it looks like it will be going to the scrapyard.

Many thanks again for all your suggestions.

Sadly this sometimes happens, and it's not an easy or obvious diagnosis without access to the car.

Thanks for that, I genuinely believed the garage when they told me, I was hopeful that the problem was easily solved ,I used this garage for 8 years when I was a courier and used to do 70/80000 miles a year and never any problems accept wear and tear so I knew they would not rip me off, now to start looking for my next adventure.

cheers to you all and once again many thanks for your assistance.
