LED headlight set up for traffic on the left or the right?

Featured Replies

MY21 with full LEDs. Only done c.1k miles and virtually none in the dark due to lockdown. Anyway, yesterday went for a 40ish mile daylight journey (headlights on auto but were off) and as we approached home a message came up on the between dials display saying something like 'lights adjusted for traffic on the right'. No idea what triggered it. Got home, went into the Infotainment and had to change the tick in the box from right to left hand traffic. Early this morning went to the airport and the headlights were on. Again nearing home the 'lights adjusted to the right' message came up again! Got home and with the lights pointing at the garage, adjusted back to left hand option in the Infotainment. The only change I could discern to the light beam pattern was that they moved slightly higher (in the horizontal plane) in the right hand setting.

So, I was sitting here now pondering the issue and reached the following question - when it says set for right hand traffic, does it mean traffic coming towards you on your right, or does it mean set up for driving your car on the right? So which is right? (And/or left!!) Your views / comments welcome. In any event I'll have to speak to the dealer as it shouldn't be adjusting the beam pattern left or right of its own accord.

PS. I understand that there is the possibility that with the satnav on, the system recognises you have gone abroad and adjusts the beams for you. But both journeys were only crossing county borders and in fairness to the people of Berkshire Surrey and Middlesex. I don't think those are yet regarded as being 'abroad' from Hampshire 😋

I've had that message pop up once, when I was still driving around Staffordshire. But as it was daytime I didn't see the headlight beam. Having reset then in the menu it hasn't reoccurred so I'm putting it down to yet another software glitch - like the one that thinks one particular 30mph road has a 45mph limit!

Skoda seem to be unable to make their minds up on how this should work.

I had a 15 plate Octavia which would change the beam pattern automatically on arrival in France, I’m convinced it also changed  the clock setting (set time by GPS was selected in infotainment).

I now (until tomorrow) own an 18 plate Octavia, which does neither. Even when you manually change the ‘driving side’ I see no real change in the headlight pattern, and I have been flashed by French drivers, mind you I get flashed by English drivers who don’t like the brightness of the LED’s as opposed to the actual direction of them.

When questioning SUK about the lack of clock setting I was informed that it only changed based on longitude, which in my mind is pathetic.

We (in normal times) do a lot of driving in France and I never rely on the in built navigation system, other than to give me a zoomed out view of my overall journey. Waze on my phone is a much better system as you get realtime routing information.

Thanks for comments - seems it's another Skoda MIB3 'glitch' and I'll just have to keep changing it back to left rather than right until such time as I can be bothered to get it into the dealer to look at it (and then tell me they can't find a fault!).

I posted this a number of years ago for a '67 plate Karoq Edition.

  • Travel Mode. This adjusts the headlights for driving on the right (note - may be model dependent, I have LED headlights). To clarify, 'Right Hand Traffic' means driving on the right (it confused me at first, I wondered if it meant oncoming traffic was to my right). When selected there is a dashboard warning every time you start the engine. It appeared to work well, nobody flashed me.
