rear wiper is not letting water out

Featured Replies

hi guys

hope everyone is ok

just noticed last week that whenever i use the rear wiper, no water comes out. the front wipers works but not the rear, i can hear the pump.

at first i thought it may be blocked/clogged but i cant seem to find the pipe.

any one know where the pipe is please?

many thanks

runs down the Nearside under the sill trim I think then up over the rear wheel arch and up to the boot, common for the Mk1 to come apart there and fill the rear foot well.

many thanks for that, will have a look tomorrow.

Past that, look all around the car for obvious signs of fluid flowing out, when you operate (Or get someone else to operate) The rear wash/wipe function. There is a repair kit you can purchase, if the flexible hose has cracked/burst. Additionally, check the actual spray nozzle has not just become caked up and blocked over time. A gently inserted needle or pin might help with that.

apologies, forgot to update this thread.

good idea on the nozzle, will try that with a pin tomorrow.

had a look round and in the engine bay and no fluid anywhere, I am thinking about taking the tailgate off, maybe water is trapped in there? oh, i didnt check the passenger footwell though so maybe water might be there too?

before doing anything.........you need to make sure pump is running (hear it) when the stalk is pressed, then remove the pipe at the wiper and see what and if anything comes out, then that will tell you "if" the nozzle is blocked OR

water is not even getting that far.

Probably easier to remove the nozzle than the pipe, it just pulls straight out if it's the same as on mk1s.

Don't bother trying to unblock it in-situ with a pin, you'll just push any debris back in for it to come back and re-block it later, if you manage it at all, which I doubt.

New nozzle is another option if it is blocked and resists unblocking in the kitchen sink. I remember it being quite tricky to do as there's a right-angle bend inside the nozzle.

from what i have read, to get to the pipe i would need to remove the panel behind the reg plate which can be fiddly when trying to put back on, to me it seems easier to check the nozzle first by removing the cap then using pliers to pull the nozzle out. i will try remove the nozzle first and check that out and will report back with an update.

thank you again for the help guys

i cant believe i forgot to say this but whenever i use the stalk, there is tiny bit of water coming out of the nozzle, very tiny like a drip or 2. it doesnt squirt out but more like slowly comes out of the nozzle.

nozzle blocked is the likely cause.

you are absolutely correct, it was blocked.

took the cap off then used a pliers and gently pulled the nozzle out and thought i will try the stalk and water came out no problem. so i just used a pin and tried to get as much out of the nozzle as possible then put the nozzle abck on and water came out. just had to realign the direction the water sprayed out.

when i tried the stalk without the nozzle, there was lots of what i could describe as mud, strange.

come to think of it, it may have been the pipe that was clogged and not the nozzle, either way i am happy we have fixed it.

many thanks for the help guys, much appreciated :)

as much as it may seem strange, it is "good" to use all the screenwash occasionally because lots ot them begin to congeal over time when sat in the tank and eventually go hard and block the nozzles.

Mixing screen washes can also cause issues as they react with each other. Best practice is to find one you like,

flush the sytem out  with clean water using front and rear washers, and then only use / top up with which ever one you choose / prefer.

Personally I find halfords bery screenwash good and it smells nice to !!.............the "cheap" ones you see in garages etc I tend not to use.

thank you for the advice

i have a habit of topping it up before it runs out, i will try to remember to flush it out every so often.

the one i use is blue and i think its the one from asda.

will have to look at it again to know.
