Weird metalic noises from the chassis

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. English is not my first language so bare with me. :)

I have a month and half old Scala (1.0 - 110HP). About a week ago I started hearing some weird crackling noises from the chassis. They seemingly appear at random when I start the car, when I pull from the garage, when I turn the steering wheel more aggressively, when I shift from 1st to 2nd gear, and when the car is idling and there's vibration. It sounds like some object (like a stone) is traped in the exhaust system and it's moving around or something metalic is grinding at something metalic. When I'm cruising on the highway, the sound is nonexisting, but when I'm driving in town, the sound reapears and it's very annoying. I tried to locate the sound. It seems like it's coming from the engine area. I went to the dealership and they were very nice. A guy drove a lap around the parking area and heard the sound(s) and said he has to have a closer look at it. He lifted the car and took a look at it but everything seemed in place. I have a new appointment on monday when a specialist will take a look at the car and try to fix it. I later noticed that the sound is louder when I shift in lower gears (from 1-3). In higher gears the sounds dissapears. Maybe less rpm and less vibration? We'll see on monday.

In the meantime: Has anyone have an idea what is causing this?

Hello again.

I recorded the sound. This is the car in idle after 1 minute. It looks like it's comming from the transmission. Does anybody have an idea?

A stone between the exhaust and heat shield would be my guess.

Does it disappear if you raise the engine revs.

Thanks, AG Falco

Hello,

yes it does. For a few momments and then it goes back to rumbling. :D

Or the exhaust knocking against something.

Get them to remove to undertrays to find it on Monday.

Back of the engine where the exhaust comes down would be where I would look.

Was it fixed?

Weirdly enough, the car stopped making noises when I made a longer journey on a motorway (200km). But surley enough, the rattling started again after 4 days. The noise when the engine was on indle (from the video) stopped completely. The noises when shifting gears is still present, but it's not consistent. I went to the dealership twice and they never found or heard anything. I showed them the tape and there was noise when changing gears when we were driving on the parking lot. They said it was not a normal sound but they checked the car troughoutly but found nothing. Everything is allegedly bolted on tightly and there there is no loosen up plastic or a exhaust pipe. I don't know if they checked the undertrays but they said that they had the car on the lift for 3 hours and found nothing wrong.

I will wait for a month or two. If the noise is still persistent I will go to the dealership again. But not this one. I have a feeling that they are not taking me seriously because I'm young and I don't know a lot about cars. :)

If you find out what the noise please keep us posted.

Thanks, AG Falco
