Do I still need to change the oil even though the engine consumes tons of it?

Soon I'll be driving a few thousands KMs. During that trip, a year will have passed since my last oil and filter change so I am considering doing it before rather than after. But I wonder: given that my TSI 1.8 consumes about 1L of oil every 800/900 KM, do I still need to change the whole oil? Or can I just change the filter?

Seems like a common issue for these TSI engines...

I used to have an Octavia with 1.8tsi and it needed about half a litre every 8-10k miles (about 13-15km)

 

So yours is using about 30 times as much, were is it going, do you have a big oily puddle under the car ?

This is going a bit OT. There is no puddle, the oil is most likely going through some not-anymore-perfect engine sealing and being burned up. The question is whether I should still change the oil even though I changed the whole amount a couple times during the last year.

If the engine's burning that much oil, you'll probably not have this engine for long, so it probably makes little difference.

Many, many years ago in my yoof I had a BMW 520 (carb version). It had a heavy drink problem. Over 260 miles it used about 4 litres of oil!!! There was a huge smokescreen behind me down the M4 and back. I bit James Bond style. Very embarrasing.

 

Needless to say, that engine did not last much longer.

If you browse the forum here you'll find quite a few people complaining of similar high but not huge oil consumption. I think the manual says up to 1L/1000Km or so is to be expected... though for me it only started happening after the 110K Km mark.

Trouble is, if that much oil or oil smoke is heading down the exhaust, lambda sensors and cat converters are going to last much less time than they should, and emissions test failure is likely to become expensive to remedy.

The car just passed the emission test with no issues. Also, no obvious smoke that I can detect.

 

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to fix it, but when I asked the Skoda service they said that it'd cost a lot, they'd even need first to perform a procedure to validate my experience and be sure that the car consumes too much oil (like I don't know...). 

Hi Giff, welcome to the forum. A little counterintuitive, but depending on the reason why it is using so much oil, you should still do complete oil changes - if piston ring sealing is the issue, there will be significant combustion product contamination to the oil. How dark is the oil when wiped on a clean cloth?

Thanks. The oil is always very dark brown/almost black. Can post a picture tomorrow.

I'd say that does indicate significant contamination, change filter too. 

The oil in my PD 2.0 went black almost instantly even when I used to do 2x oil changes a year! That and the stupid black dipstick are a nightmare. 

Yeah but pds are diesel, compression ignition and the oil was always different and always turned black almost immediately.

 

Edit. The pd oil had to be engineered to cope with the pd injector sheer forces.  

 

Fwiw I would change the oil and filter but I take no satisfaction in telling you, you are on borrowed time. I've had threads and Pms with so many 1.8tsi ea888 gen 2 owners I've lost count.

 

 

Your lucky if you didn't buy a car with the immediate problem. As private sale or even trader after a few months and 1000 plus miles it gets tricky no doubts.

 

Beyond the emissions (you say passed),  cat converter, lambda sensor there is the bigger problem of the combustion  chamber, valves, hot spots. The engine will be toast consuming 1l per 600 miles. It will give up. They can't cope with and were never designed to deal with that.

Scraper oil rings will be the culprit the new design pistons also require new con rods as the gudgeon pin is a different size. There are aftermarket pistons that will use the old con rods but still an expensive job.
