Anti roll bar linkage pin or bush excessively worn

Featured Replies

Failed MOT on the above. He actually showed me where the roll bar was and showed the play but I don't actually know what I'm replacing. Am I replacing bushes, stabiliser bushes, joints or a whole section etc.

Should I just start dismantling the roll bar and check everything?

Any advice would be great.

I see them, they have a spline like bolt head connecting them at the top and bottom. I should change the stabiliser bushes as well a bit further up the roll bar however the bolts holding them on seem very difficult to get at, have you done this before without removing all the parts under the roll bar to get access?

I found these but I notice my links are secured by a bolt with a spline like head yet on the picture these seem to have bolts fixed into the link, do you think these will be ok?

If you're doing it yourself it's very easy to do,

Watch this

if you take to an independent garage labour should cost no more than 20 quid per side,

The ones you have linked are correct but I doubt they'll last very long, if you can pay a few quid more get TRW or lemforder,

I see you can do all this from under the wheel arch, I was crawling under the car, doh. Easy job.

How do you remove this nut it just spins, there's a white plastic cover thing on the other end do I have to remove this first?

There's generally a hex, XZN or torx-key orifice in the end of the threaded rod, for counterholding.

Or sometime flats nearer the balljoint that an open-ended spanner can get on.

Where the nut is, you should be able to put Allen key or torx,

If not then you should be able to put a spanner near the joint where the rubber boot ends and then undo nut

I see that. So I tried a 4.5mm Allen bit and it seemed a good fit however it may well be a torx of similar size and I may end up ruining the hole. Is there an obvious way to tell which bit type and size needed?

I didn't actually try and remove the nut yet just tried a bit for size.

No obvious way as different brands may vary in size,

If the Allen fits snug (no movement) hold it tight then just go for it,

I've never come across a 4.5mm Allen fitting on anything VAG I don't think, so my money is on a Torx.

What is the equivalent on the new ones?  Not much likelihood that they'll be the same though.
