Tyres - XL?

Featured Replies

I just bought a 2017 2.0 TDI, and on the rear it has, I believe, non XL tyres fitted.

Is that safe / OK? What are the OEM fit? These are Continental Sport Contact 5, 235/45/R18W.

According to wheel-size.com (and they are sometimes wrong), 235/45R18 tyres are pumped up to 2.4 Bar (35psi) / 2.2 Bar (32psi). You only need XL tyres if you are going to pump them up to more than 3 Bar (44psi).

Thanks for such a quick reply! Sounds like I’m alright then.

Replacing one of the tyres due to a bulge(!), so want to make sure I get the right one.

"XL" means "eXtra Load"; only really needed if you regularly do stuff like 4 up plus luggage plus trailer.

Funnily XL tyres in 205/40 R 17  were OEM fit to some Mk2 Fabia vRS that are 5 seaters at a push and can not tow as not approved.

Non-XL 205/40R17 tyres have a load index of only 80 (450kg), which isn't enough for the Fabia MK2. Hence it was fitted with XL 205/40R17 tyres which have a load index of 84 (500kg).

Not only that, but non-XL tyres in size 205/40R17 are extremely rare. Most of the big brands don't even make non-XL tyres in the 205/40R17 size.

So towing is a red herring.  as is tyre pressures.  But hey hoe.

When Manufacturers fit XL tyres as OEM then best that replacements are as well.
