1.2 12V 07 plate stalls at idle & temp limp mode after a thrashing

Featured Replies

58k on the clock (45 when we bought it last year), when idling cold or hot revs ALWAYS slowly drop within 30 seconds and cuts out. Could be because of uneven idling or uneven idling because of low revs. No EM light when still running or when restarted.
Possibly unrelated, twice after hard acceleration and holding onto gears through roundabouts we've had the EM light start flashing. It's fine unless you panic and ease off the gas coz you can never get the revs up again. After a few hundred yards of crawling, light goes out and it picks up. After avoiding this set of circumstances we've successfully gone on holiday to Wales in it and it's not recurred.
Any ideas and thirdly, which is a good code reader (have an OP-COM whassname for the Zafira which seems OK).

With a bit of gas, the stalling at idle doesn't happen :)

How does that compare to this? I mean if it is Universal I'll only need one, right? ;) And does the Autel one save Voltages etc in an Excel file, I knd of like that with the OPCOM one I have.

Helpful garage suggested either a coil, camshaft sensor or crank sensor. I am about to try & get part numbers off vehicle unless anyone can assure me of the right ones, time is of the essence, need this sorted by Friday and the sooner I get on eBay the better ;)

I'm not convinced, but if you want to chuck bits at it, your engine code is BME, view the links on a computer not a phone to see all the columns:

Is it the same coil that is on the 1.4 engine?

Yes, BKY, BUD, BBZ engines are all 1.4 with the same coils....

See if you can push your budget out to a ODBEleven Pro - it supports your car and you can get proper diagnostics instead of just a generic code reader.

Part numbers all correspond to those listed except the coils, I've got 036905715 E on all cylinders, weird? Should I get F or E?

Suffix E is made by Eldor in Italy, I just bet suffix F is made somewhere else by someone else. The part itself won't have changed.

Heard coils need to be put back at original cylinder if removed but if it's a replacement will it need 'setting up' at the ECU?

You heard some nonsense there. Nothing to do other than extract old, fit new. Careful not to break connector latches.

In taking spark plugs out (they looked ok, light brown electrodes etc but gap 0.9mm; replaced them anyway) middle coil looked like either it has been in contact with something hot or something has been rubbing against it. I'm inclined to think the former as the groove is rough not smooth and polished from rubbing. Wondering if it was previously in cyl 1 position and that earth wire crossing coil area has been rubbing in the past? Anyhow, that's the first coil I will swap when the spare turns up eventually.

Looks a bit like it's been cracked during a clumsy previous removal, then someone's tried to melt it with a soldering iron tip to re-fuse the cracked plastic.

Well, both faults haven't come up again in 2 days of going on driving lessons with my son, unfortunately he didn't pass his test today so now I've got time to have a play around I can see if it was the coil or new spark plugs/gaps that fixed it.

Might as well resurrect this post as the limp mode intermittent fault came back after 2 years and approximately 35k miles of happy motoring.

If memory serves, changing the camshaft sensor seemed to stop the limp mode at speed/accelerating away from roundabouts and replacing the damaged/cracked coil stopped it stalling when idling at junctions. The limp mode was intermittent so I suppose replacing either or both might have helped although I'm convinced changing a coil stopped the lumpy idle and stalling.

Anyway I'll let you know how I get on this time 😊

Check the condition of the brake vacuum line all the way from brake servo reservoir to inlet manifold, check for splits at ends and junctions and loose fit.

May not be the cause but its quick and easy to check and the hard plastic piping is often split at that age, causing fuel mixture issues and potentially brake assistance issues.

They're shot, at every join. Ebay or ECP for the parts? I can nip to ECP on the commute.

Servo pipe is a dealer part.
