So now you have Columbus MIB1, with Bluetooth, without DAB, part number 5E0035045D, with USB 5Q0035726C and fortunately you don't have CANTON sound system.

You can install one of four different OEM glove box units:

- MIB2 Bolero

- MIB2 Amundsen

- MIB2 Columbus

- MIB2.5 Columbus

You don't need to replace display unit unless you want to retrofit MIB2.5 Columbus as the only display unit that works with it is 5E0919606D.

If you woulkd like to use Apple CarPlay then you also have to replace USB port.

The question is what is your budget and which of listed below features are "must have":

- Video playback from DVD, USB, SD

- CD playback

- OEM navigation

- displaying OEM maps in Virtual Cluster (Active Info Display).

All units support SmartLink (Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink), rear view camera, voice command. features that differ them:

- MIB2 Bolero - no OEM navigation, no CD/DVD drive, no video playback from SD/USB

- MIB2 Amundsen - OEM navigation, no CD/DVD drive, no video playback from SD/USB, support for displaying OEM maps in Active Info Display (Virtual Cluster)

- MIB2 Columbus - OEM navigation, CD/DVD drive, video playback from SD/USB, no support for displaying OEM maps in Active Info Display (Virtual Cluster)

- MIB2.5 Columbus - OEM navigation, CD/DVD drive, video playback from SD/USB, support for displaying OEM maps in Active Info Display (Virtual Cluster)

How can I identify these units, will they have the name on them or do I need part numbers?

  • Not too fussed about the connect devices as things go - as long as I can get to Siri and Waze through CarPlay I’ll be happy! 😂

  • Let me know your VIN on PM and I will list options you have.

  • @RobMac1, shall keep you posted! The amp  just came from a breakers - it’s a little knocked around but (apparently) tested in good working order; it’s off a Superb but they’re the same part so nothing

Part numbers are the best option.

Also i don’t have Canton so idk if i need amplifier module.

Glove box unit must be patched and in this case it must be opened and soldered.

USB for CarPLay is a must and later you can add wirelesss adapter too

Good afternoon

I apologize in advance for posting in this thread.

I am considering retrofitting my mib1 Columbus to something more modern, perhaps as modern as possible.

A little background.

I had a Harman mib1 high unit installed in my car and everything worked fine except for one channel of the amplifier.

At some point I had a desire to replace the standard accoustics for better quality, but for this I needed to have all 4 channels working.

So I decided to "heat" the chip with a soldering station. Everything went well but unfortunately the flux from the amplifier board got on the motherboard and did a lot of bad things, in fact I lost the unit by my own stupidity.

At the moment I am considering two options.

1. Buying the same unit second-hand

2. Retrofit to the most modern and suitable for my car.

3.???

I have been reading various forums for a few days now but I still have a lot of questions

1. I'm not completely sure I understand what I need to buy for the upgrade and will this kit fit?

2. What do I need to do to make it work? I mean removing lockouts etc. I don't know how to do it yet. But I have Odis-e offline.

3. If I buy a modern mib2.5 kit do I need additional wires besides the usb connector?

4. Is there anyone on the forum who could help with this question?

Thank you for your attention

with best wishes

Yurii

Hello Yurii,

Thank you for your message. Firstly (and before you should have done anything), I hope you made a backup of the config of the car and all its modules; especially the 5F module. Without that, you are going to get into a world of pain. Typically, you would then get somebody like our resident in-house specialist @pab567 to sell you a new head unit and you would be responsible for a new screen from your local VW/Skoda dealership.

There are some cables that need some minor modifications, but once the system is connected up, you would need to get Component Protection removed. I'm not sure if the off-line version of ODIS would do it or not; I know that some Skoda dealers are now loathed to help, some dealers are better than others.

Yes, you would need the newer USB module for your car to make use of Apple Carplay/Android Auto.

@mystique4u was Columbus MIB1 factory installed? Could you pls share VIN so I can check compatibility and share the options with you?

Good afternoon @varaderoguy !

Thank you very much for your reply.

I backed up all blocks using the Car Scanner App twice with different adapters.

If that's what you mean?

Have a nice day.

Best regards,

Yurii

Good afternoon, dear @pab567

I am incredibly glad that you have found the time to pay attention to my humble self.

Yes, I believe it was the original MIB1.

My VIN is TMBLD7NE7E0055843

I am also ready to provide any other information on my part.

Have a nice day.

Best regards,

Yurii

Indeed, factory setup is Columbus MIB1, with Bluetooth, with DAB, part number 5E00358020A, with Media In port and fortunately you don't have CANTON sound system.

You can install one of four different OEM glove box units:

- MIB2 Bolero

- MIB2 Amundsen

- MIB2 Columbus

- MIB2.5 Columbus

You don't have to replace display unit unless you want to go for MIB2.5 Columbus as the only display unit that works with it is 5E0919606D.

You also have to replace Media In with USB port.

- MIB2 Amundsen - OEM navigation, no CD/DVD drive, no video playback from SD/USB, support for displaying OEM maps in Active Info Display (Virtual Cluster)

- MIB2 Columbus - OEM navigation, CD/DVD drive, video playback from SD/USB, no support for displaying OEM maps in Active Info Display (Virtual Cluster)

- MIB2.5 Columbus - OEM navigation, CD/DVD drive, video playback from SD/USB, support for displaying OEM maps in Active Info Display (Virtual Cluster)

Thanks for your detailed answer @pab567 !

Let me answer all your questions...

- Video playback from DVD, USB, SD
never used before, so it means dont need this feature.

- CD playback
usually use bluetooth, dont need this as well

- OEM navigation
this must be because pretty handy, even critical

- displaying OEM maps in Virtual Cluster (Active Info Display).
I'm not sure I understand you correctly. On the main panel with my MIB1, I had arrows and the distance to the maneuver. I was basically fine with that. Can something better be done?

Have I understood you correctly?

Could I install a simpler version of MIB unit with CarPlay support(i use an Iphone) and keep my current display, thereby saving money?

I'm still very unsure about the budget. I looked at Allegro and OLX from Poland. It would be better if you could give me an idea of how much it costs.

In theory, I am quite happy to keep my current display but get a working unit + Car Play, but again, I don't understand the difference in price yet.

I would be grateful if you could give me some guidance.

Thanks!

PS One more question about Bluetooth quality: my listeners complain that they can't hear me well, and I found out that this is because older devices use a hands-free profile in which the audio path is very limited in frequency. I would like to resolve this as well.

Yes, you can replace your instruments cluster with digital one, called Active Info Display (AID) or Virtual Cluster (VC) as in teh picture below:

Yes, you can save money and install a simpler version of MIB unit with CarPlay support and keep your current display Looking at your requirements I believe Amundsen is the right choice.

I will PM you for details.

Hi @pab567 , are you still in the business of helping people source / retrofit MIB units in their Octavia’s? I have a 2014 model, most likely with MIB1 Bolero, DAB and CANTON. I was thinking about upgrading it to MIB 2.x Amundsen or Columbus. The goal is to install and enable reversing camera and Apple CarPlay.

I sent you PM
