1.4 TSi oil usage and fuel consumption

Featured Replies

63 plate 1.4 TSi estate that's now done 92,000 (trouble free) miles. Last service was at 86,000 miles (local independent we've used for years) and the low oil light has come on, which is unusual. I didn't check the level after the service so no idea if the garage have filled it to the brim but if they did it's used about 4 litres in 6000 miles.

I've added 0.5 litre oil (Halfords own 5W30 to VW 504 spec) and will monitor the usage. I've also noticed that fuel consumption has dropped slightly, just done a run to Nottingham and back 65 miles each way mainly on M1 and A46 so nice easy driving and was getting 42mpg compared to long-term average of 44-46mpg. No smoke from the exhaust as far as I can see.

Anything to worry about or pretty much par for the course for this engine / age / mileage?

Welcome.

Nothing to worry about yet since you do not know if the put the correct quantity of oil in at the service.

Less oil was running hotter, and using oil and degrading it quicker.

the correct quantity heats up slower, but cools down quicker as it should be doing, oil is a coolant.

?

Why 4 litres in 6,000 miles,

have you put that much in since the service?

***

Opening the bonnet and putting in 0.5 litres puts the light or message out, but so does opening the bonnet and doing nothing does as well for about 60 miles.***

Once you topped up have you checked again when the engine / oil has been up to the normal operating temp, parked on the flat and checked after a few minutes.

It should be above the crosshatch area, so on the flat bit. Area A as shown in the Owners Manual.

At the next oil change you might want to stop using VW 504 00 long life oil, 5w 30 FS III and do fixed service intervals for Oil & Filter changes and use VW 502 00, so 5w 40 FS.

Thanks for the welcome. First time poster, long time driver!

The 0.5 litre has moved the level up to halfway on the crosshatched area on the dipstick which I believe is about right (I read elsewhere that 1 litre should take it from the bottom to the top on crosshatch area?). Car was 'warm' but not up to full temperature.

I believe it is not right and less than the capacity by a fair bit.  You would know that if the oil was drained and measured.

Dip it cold, see where that is.

Then when you have driven at least 10 miles do a check and compare.

Too many mechanics and techs say it makes no difference, well do it and see because it does with a 1.4 TSI / TFSI and it has been an issue for years now.

Best run with a correct quantity of oil and not as much as 1/4 low before you get a Low Oil warning.

Check for evidence of leaks under the car, my car had a leak from the sump plug after a service, may have been cross threaded. Also experienced significant oil leaks from dealer fitted oil filters in the past, could be other leaks eg pcv valve.

Evidence usually seen as oil on sump cover or under the car behind the engine.

2500 miles since posting this and the level has hardly dropped at all, looks like the garage didn't put enough in at the last service. One to keep an eye on 👀

I've run a 1.5TSi eco on a 68 plate for 40K miles, and it has always used a litre every 4K miles. Never had a car use so much or flash the add oil warning before. With the kangarooing it makes it all in all the worst engine I've ever had, which is a shame because out of town it runs well and I like the quietness of it.

wasn't there a technical fix for the kangarooing?

Yes a software update, but it was only a partial fix and VW/Skoda aren't releasing anything else. If you have one you are stuck with the issue. Speaking to Skoda UK they said other people also complained it didn't fix it. It's the reason why this Skoda (the 6th I have) will be the last. Good enough cars but too many issues, and usually not resolved.

@HotVRs  When was the Software Update done and are you certain another has not been issued since?

Are you topping up with 5w 30 FS III  or with 0w 20 FS IV,

and have you considered or actually started using 5w 40 FS so VW502 00 which is suitable for Variable Fixed Servicing / Oil & Filter changes ?

Update, the car went in for a service at 96,000 miles on 9th November. Given the previous problem I checked the oil level as soon as I got it back and it was at the top of (b) on the above diagram, I also noted that the service sheet says they've put 4litres of 0W20 in.

Checked the level yesterday and it's dropped to about halfway on the dipstick already having done about 500 miles.

Is the thinner oil burning off or leaking? After I topped it up with 5W30 previously it was OK.

What oil spec are they using and what is the specified oil capacity of the engine?

508 spec oil is the wrong oil for a 63 plate 1.4tsi. It should be 504 spec 5w30, or can use 502 spec 5/10w30/40 if on annual fixed regime.

508 spec was not introduced until 2017 and intended only for new designs after that date. It is not backward compatible with 504. The oil is too thin and may/will damage your engine and thats why its using so much.

To add to the confusion.VAG info for the MQB 1.4lt engine is:-

508 00 or 504 00 spec for flexible service..

502 00 for fixed service for fuel not compliant with EN288

Any of the above three specs for fixed service when using fuel compliant with EN288 (as we are in UK).

There is a caveat from 2018 re the change in the oils..

I'd need to know the exact four digit engine code..

Personally speaking in my 2014yr 1.4lt CHPA I use Castrol Edge Titanium FST 0W40 A3/B4 (which is VW502 00 approved).

Not got the engine code to hand (or know how to find it!) but pretty sure it's 103kW so CHPA or CPTA and therefore 508 spec is ok?

VW 504 00 / 507 00 is the correct spec for your Euro 5 1.4 TSI for Fixed or Variable Service Interval Oil & Filter changes, and VW 502 00 for Fixed if you want.

If you want to use the wrong oil then that is purely your own choice.

ERWIN (official VAG workbooks) documentation from March 2021..although its for MK7 Golf its the same engine & will be the same across the brands...

Basically they simplified it for our EA211 petrol engines..

504 00 for variable time/mileage interval oil changes

502 00 for fixed time/mileage interval oil changes

Use the above spec FIRST to select your oil NOT the "w rating".

Then of the oils you have available chose the grade (part synthetic/fully synthetic) & "w" rating you prefer as the above VW spec will cover various "w" ratings from numerous brands/manufacturers.

I think my car is on the flexible service (I have to rest the service notification using VCSD). Would it be possible to change it to fix service by VCDS?

Yes you can alter it with VCDS...I swapped mine from flexible (factory setting) to fixed...

Thanks for your help @fabdavrav. Is there any guide that I can follow?
