To Scala or not to Scala

I'm looking to downsize from an Octavia (don't do the mileage i used to, and I'm paying for this, not the company) so I'm looking at a used Scala, probably petrol, probably a 1.5

 

What are the known issues, and any notable plusses/minuses people are aware of ?

I recently bought a scala but went for the 1.0 due to some problems I read about the 1.5. Skoda may have resolved these now so it might be worth double checking. Will you be going manual or dsg?

Im looking at either a skoda scala or a ford puma, one scala I m looking at has an incredible spec including comfort pack,power tailgate,glass roof,grey paint,digital dashboard,sport seats,18 inch wheels,privacy glass for £19'995 ,with the 115 bhp tsi engine 6 speed, alot of car for the money ,for a ford puma with thev 125 bhp engine,with comfort pack electric tailgate and privacy glass im looking at £19500 plus,skoda seems great value for money ,I have been a long time ford customer and remember the skodas of the 80,s,not sure what to do?

Are there any scala owners on here that can give me their feedback on ownership,because I am thinking very seriously about purchasing one,its a toss up between one of those or a ford puma,the scala seems good value for money

What I can say is that before purchasing my Kamiq, I test drove a 1.0 tsi Scala and I found it very slow and underpowered. I currently have the 1.5 tsi in my Kamiq and I am happy with it.

Also check safety tests. I ordered the scala 1.5 tsi as a famlily car :)

 

Overall it's a good car for the price point. I have a 2020 1.0 TSI 115ps DSG SE-L. Engine punches above it's weight (was originally looking at the 1.5 but didn't need to look past the 1.0 after a test drive). 

 

My gripes are limited, but would say some plastics on the dash are a bit basic and I have had some issues with the Amundsen system losing a data connection. 

When I used to do more mileage I went for a diesel, now I don't do so much I decided the mpg wasn't as big a factor. Different way of looking at it I guess. 

 

Paying for it myself has always been the way, never had a company car. I have bought new in the past 3 times - nice feeling - but not great economics.

 

I wonder if someone smart could calculate the relative cost / savings for something like this:

 

New Scala / Similar vehicle £20k. gets an extra 20 mpg(?) on annual mileage of 7000

 

Used (8 months old) vRS Octavia £18,800. 

 

I wonder what the relative used valiues 3 yrs later would be too. 

 

My insurance was just under £200, its now £202.

 

When you look at lease cars they charge near enough the full cost of optional extra's over the life of the lease - My guess would be that the professionals don't believe options add much to used car prices. 

 

Quite a bit to think about, but while I'm thinking I got a smile on my face. 

 

You got to love that new car smell though, and the latest reg plate on your drive.  

 

Don't quote me when I come back in a year or two saying I want a brand new car!!

 

 

 

 

How is everyone getting on with their decisions?  Any new Scala owners?

 

Had mine 18months, and although its far from stock now it's a great car at it's base, and as everyone has mentioned, phenomenal value for money.

 

The 1.0TSI 115PS is absolutely the way to go if buying new,  you save around 2k compared to the 1.5TSI.  For daily driving it is a brilliant little engine.  Don't let 3 cylinders put you off, Ford Fiesta ST uses a 3 cylinder as does the Yaris GR and they both put out big power.  If you want the extra punch and power.  Then get the 1.0TSI and remap it to Stage1,  there are plenty of good VAG garages around offering RacingLine OEM+ or APR ECU remaps.  Mine is mapped with a RacingLine OEM+ Stage 1 at 150PS (Same power as the 1.5 at stock) and it pulls and picks up great.  Still just as efficient as stock but has the extra power on tap if you need/want it.  A remap will only set you back about 300GBP too so that's still a saving of approx. 1700 compared to the 1.5TSI.

 

@VRS_White_Hatch I would agree that 'professionals don't believe options add much to used car prices'  a quick scan of used car sites will show you this, even when they are advertised, with 1000+ optional extras, the listing price is very similar to that of a comparative model with no options.

 

@Mdev would totally agree with your comment 'some plastics on the dash are a bit basic'  I could not stand the grey lattice dash, it looked so cheap, I know it was there to with the seats, but when you are sitting in the driving position you don't see the seats, you see the cheap dash - I did an interior wrap on this panel with black brushed steel vinyl, looks way better, and I think Skoda now do a similar look on some models in Europe.

 

 @Ali748did you choose between the Scala and Puma yet?  I came from a ford focus 1.6 125PS, and I wouldn't say I didn't like it, but the Scala has really made me fall in love with driving again.  The options are pricey but they do complete the look of the car, especially the pan roof, extended glass tailgate, and full LEDs all round,  without them the car looks a little bit unfinished like skoda have tried to cut costs, in my opinion of course.

I purchased my Scala SEL 110 BHP manual around May 2021. I got a lease, no extras. 

 

I came from owning a Fabia redline. I thought I really liked the fabia, until I got the scala. The scala is just better in almost every way. The only niggle is as the scala is a bigger car, its slightly heavier, and therefore not us punchy / nippy from a standstill. But that is only a small niggle.

 

But that is only a small niggle. I agree the arm rest is little low and would have been nice with some adjustment, however I recently, actually today drove a fabia again, every time I got into the car I would want to rest my arm on the arm rest.  I could not wait to get back into the scala.

 

The scala has a much better ride quality and the interior is 100 % better, yes there some hard plastic, but so what? There is hard plastic in I think all cars in this segment and there some good quality soft plastic where it matters. 

 

Bottom line its a good buy, Skoda offers a lot for your money compared to other brands. 

 

More on the question about the Ford, I understand everyone has their own opinion and likes. I have found the inside of a ford look little dated and the infotainment screen just looks out of place / odd.

 

The Scala has a bigger boot, its longer , however just ever so slightly narrower. 

 

At least you can test drive the 2, when I ordered the car we were in a lockdown and unable to properly test drive the Scala. ( still happy I made the purchase ).
