Tyre Tread or whats left of it

Featured Replies

I have 5.5k miles in the octy and my fronts ( Goodyear F1's) are down to 3.5 on left and near 4mm on right. Now i have done some fast driving but most of the time round town im in eco. I dont think ill get much past 10k on these tires. Plus i wouldnt want to enter the winter with below 3mm. It must be the torque that is shaving these tires.

Lastly Tyre or Tire ,, seems those pesky Yanks want us to use Tire going on the spelling check here and other aps. Tyre is UK or European spelling me thinks

Could it be that your wheel alignment is out? Perhaps after an encounter with a gutter or a pot-hole.

I have had tyres wear out in a few thousand KMs on my other cars and always it was due to the alignment being off.

Could be the real ****ty roads in Scotland , rough un-maintained asphalt. Plenty of it here. I bet Dave from Sydney has smooth free from frost , snow , ice , torrential rain roads.

Lucky you Dave.

However OZ has the top 10 of deadliest creatures and that would scare the living daylights oot of me. Spiders, snakes and F-in big sharks, not to mention the crims ( watched your factual documentary called Neighbours back in the 90s., got so much info on your culture)

Deadliest creatures in Glasgow range from the junkie******s, local neds or the September Wasp.

I would be surprised if you got to 8k based on your current mileage, I think they start at 8m but I could be wrong.

I used to drive each day on 30 miles of country road to and from work with very heavy right foot. I would get 10k on most sets of tyres I had, sometimes 12k. I would ask the garage to check the alignment as something isn't right.

Scottie , i hear from so many drivers that they get 20k plus out of tyres on a FWD car. Ive never had that. My last car was a Superb , so big heavy engine on the axles and best was near 13k. Now i don't ever go to legal limit of 1.6mm , i change at just over 2mm or near 3mm if its the winter, I also never buy budgets , i'll drop to mid range say Falkens, Toyos but mostly i buy premium like conti 5 or 6 , Mitch 4 or Goodys. i do this as  frequently I'll be on the road to Aberdeen or Inverness. As the only thing between you and the road , i want the assurance that my tyres are of good qual.

What do you forum guys think , todays budgets are ok for long distance after all they do have to have all the UK accreditation?

What do you guys replace OEM's with , what mileage do you get from a front set?

Left may be wearing faster due to roundabouts.

My last car was an Audi Q7 and I would get 20k+ on a set of tyres from 80% motorway driving 20% city, so it is possible to get more with heavy cars if the driving mix is right.

The car I was referring to earlier was an Audi S4 with a tyre shredding 4.2 V8 engine over the front wheels, 339 bhp and 302 lbf⋅ft of torque and I would hope my new car covers at least the same mileage on a set of tyres.

Having said that when I was a lot younger I had a 206 and that went through a set in 6k with mainly town driving, I replaced with a different brand and got 10k on the next set.

Given some of the roads you are on I wouldn't touch budget tyres, look at some of the youtube clips comparing them with premium brands

OEM's or another premium brand if the distance covered is crap on the OEM

It is true that frost, snow and ice are not a problem where I live but poor quality roads are common.

Nevertheless I normally get 30000-60000 kms from the tyres (varies depending on FWD/RWD, front/back, tyre type etc).

When I did get < 10000kms from a tyre I always found that the wheel alignment with the new tyres showed a significant misalignment.

I have mostly used Bridgestone such as RE003.

Personally in the north of England I’d go for an all weather tyre like a Michelin Cross Climate, I have them on my other car a RWD auto Volvo and they are amazing.

On my previous car, a Superb, I got over 30k miles on the OEM Contis with about 25k on the Goodyears I replaced them with - but it was hardly a tyre shredder with the adequate, but leisurely, 1.4TSI (125) motor up front. Oddly, the rears wore quicker than the fronts; I suspect alignment issues.

Guess my driving style is a lot less spirited than it was 10 years ago and most of my mileage is relatively easy on the tyres - last trip to see family in Lanarkshire had about 10 miles of urban/minor roads and 390 miles motorways and dual carriageways!

I stick with premium tyre brands, Goodyear being my current choice, and change them at around 2.5 - 3mm (my nipper had a 720 spin on tyres with 2.5mm, thankfully missed everything but it focuses the mind!). Given the recent summer downpours, like @MiniNinjaRob, I’m considering Michelin Cross Climates or similar next time round.

I always focus on wet braking and handling. All tyres seem to perform acceptably to me in the dry, even the budget ones. Obviously the best tyres are better than the worst, but even the worst tyres (in good condition) don't give cause for concern in the dry. But in the wet, that's a whole different issue and I've previously given away a set of crappy budget tyres because they were downright dangerous in the wet. (The person I gave them to has been very happy with them, but she does drive very slowly and cautiously.)

I was thinking about getting another set of Turanza's, but it seems the T005 wet performance isn't the best, so I'll probably go for whatever is good in the wet at the time of purchase.

Tyre performance seems to change every year, so it's not like I can just buy a set of Conti Premium Contacts every time I buy tyres, as this year they seem to have focussed on dry performance rather than wet. (They used to be amazing in the wet.) The T001's I have on the car at the moment have been fine, though I haven't particularly asked much of them in the wet.

If I was buying today, I'd be looking at Michelin Primacy 4, or something with better wet performance if I could find it.

typo correction

The best people to compare wear will be those with the same car as @Greezy56 with the same tyres and that drives in the Glasgow area.  They might drive very differently than the OP and have the tyres at a different pressure but they are on similar asphalt and weather conditions.      @EnterName my rather heavy 1,500 kg Corsa EV came on the totally crap Michelin Primacy 4 that many do to give longer range by having little grip.  The were changed week 1 for CrossClimates but when the snow came on went Michelin Alpin 6.  They will stay on for the next 2 years until the car goes back.  10,000 miles on they are wear free.     I have CrossClimate SUV,s on my Shogun and I down sized the width from 285 to 265 wide, sadly they are pretty crap on snow but fine on dry, wet and not icy conditions.
