Starting problem when car is warm

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have a octy vrs tdi estate (60 plate) my issue started around a month ago the car starts fine from cold and if u stop n start it again roughly after 15-20 mins it starts fine but on the 3rd time it won’t fire straight up you have to crank it again and all seems ok. It did it again earlier so only the second time in a month so it seems more intermittent  My guess is maybe the battery (5 yrs old roughly) I have seen other people on here with similar issues but no definitive answers. Any help I would appreciate

Load test on the battery; most places will do that for free if they get the business should you need a replacement.

Or maybe the CTS.

Yeah I think il do that I didn’t wanna spend loads of money on different parts to find out it’s something else

Does it crank energetically?

There is a scenario where the engine won't start if a certain cranking RPM threshold isn't reached, this only happens after a certain engine temperature is reached, not from cold.

IIRC a faulty crankshaft/coolant sensors can cause this as does a weak battery/lazy starter motor.

Yeah it does just doesn’t fire until you turn the key and it’s fine. What size batteries do these cars take just in case it is the battery plz.

It should be marked on it!

Just had a look there’s nothing on top of the battery to say the size, so unless it’s under the battery case down the side of the battery!

If you're buying local they will know or have a customer catalogue available for you to choose from.

A good experiment to test the tired battery theory is if you can readily recreate the non start condition then try with a jump start.  That should rule out the battery from your shopping list if it still won't start.

Ok thank you il give that a try. I appreciate the help 👍

My 2.0TDi is similar. Cold start it fires up right away. When hot it needs cranking for a few seconds to get going.  No fault codes. I've had the car 13 years and have had 2 new batteries in that time. They made no difference in the hot start performance.  All Earthing points are good - I cleaned them all last year.  It's not a big issue but still bugs me a bit.

So just an advice to the OP that don't needlessly change your battery as it might not be the cause.

Yeah it just bugs me more than anything, my mate has a battery tester so will find out later if it’s that or not, if the battery is fine I will just leave it and see if it gets worse, like you I have no fault codes, my car has done nearly 14000 miles now so I suppose sensors etc will need replacing sooner rather than later

Hi,

Had hot starting problems for a few years and finally got round to doing something about it. Car would start first time in the coldest weather (inspite of having four open circuit  glow-plugs) but once it had warmed up it took a few turns before it would fire. It was not battery related - same with brand new and older batteries.

Had the cam position sensor changed - not cheap but a DIY job if you are able - and from then on it started first time hot or cold.

Changed a crank position sensor on my daughers car (1.4 Kia Rio)  because cold starting, OK but after it had warmed up engine just cut oiut without warning - changed sensor (easy job that one) and no problems afterwards.

Cheers,

Lloyd

Tested my battery last nite it’s showing low- medium charge so il put a a new one on soon, and I guess if it’s still doing it il do the other sensors as well

Hi guys. Sorry to get back on this subject again, my new battery arrived earlier and I was about to fit it when somebody told me that as my car is remapped fitting a new battery could wipe this out. Does anybody know if this is true or not please before I go ahead and fit it! Thank you

You are quite safe, the remap data is safely written on the ECU EPROM requiring no power for retention.

Thank you mate I appreciate your feedback 👍

Any update on this @Dan13 ?
