How many MP3's on a DVD?

Featured Replies

I know its almost "how long's a piece of string" question but, how many MP3's of 192kbps (or what ever is one notch down from that) could you fit on a single layer DVD ?

I make it about 205346 minutes of music...so, assuming 4 minutes per track, about 51336 songs...

 really !?!?!

Thats my entire CD collection on one disc!

Ripping all your CDs to MP3 will be one hell of a ballache though... ;)

Rob.

you can fit 35 of the 'Now' albums on one DVD ;)

I think that's about 1600 tracks?

Took me 2 weeks (6000 songs).

Err... a little on the optimistic side I think there Rob! ;)

I think around 850 tracks/3,200 mins at 192kb/sec (which is the setting I'd reccomend).

And for 128kbps ?

And for 128kbps ?

You get nasty 'singing out of a can' effects on some tracks.

BUT half as many songs again...

:( damn - looks more like just 50 albums now.

And for 128kbps ?

5133 mins (and I've checked my workings this time)...

As Chris says though, can make some songs sound poor.

Other option would be to use "variable bit rate", whereby the encoding software uses as many bits as it needs to attain a certain quality.

So how long does it take to encode an average 18 track Album to MP3, including titles etc. ?

Depends on the software you use and the computer you use it on...titles can be had off IMDB (or whatever it's called) to save you typing them in...

Best bet would be to do one and time it, and extrapolate from there!

Rob.

If its any help I have 2931 tracks in my Music folder equalling 12.6 Gig, Just under 3 DVD's worth, Varying quality, but most pretty good

Does Windows media player have the ability to do it ? Or do I need to use nero etc ?

DVD writing will be done at work as thats where the DVD writer is - potentially I'll encode at home, burn to CDR then take to work to copy to DVD.

Now that IS a how longs a piece of string question...

It depends on so many factors, it takes ME about 1.5 - 2 minutes

And I get the album art off the web whilst I'm waiting...;)

Chris

EDIT: I use iTunes by the way

Crikey! That's a whole lot of music.

yup... 22000 files x 4 mins each on average = 88000 mins = 61 days of listening if I set it all off and ran it non stop!

Maybe I have ripped enough of my CDs now lol
