Any mention of the word "Haldex"?

Depends what you actually want to know...?

It looks a bit like this:

The all-wheel drive clutch (aka haldex) is responsible for transferring torque to the rear wheels. Both differentials are open so left/right torque distribution is achieved by braking the spinning wheel(s).

It's all electrically controlled so the AWD controller will detect or pre-empt slip and move the torque around as it sees fit :)

When you start and accelerate the Haldex Gen 4 automatically kicks in. Also when there is slip at the front.

Nope! :/

In essence, with HALDEX 4, you have 85% of the drive at the front and permanent 15% at the back on normal roads (Haldex 5 has quicker clutches and engages instantly).  As you loose traction at the front wheels, the clutch for the rear kicks in and transfer power to the rear tyres.

Could I recommend that you have the HALDEX system services (it needs doing [recommended] every 20k miles) and get the filter or sieve cleaned or replaced.

How easy is it to change the oil and filter? Diy job or pester a local car repair firm ?

Its been linked in the vwvortex pages but this site is very useful in understanding operation and faults...  Haldex Parts and ECU Repairs by Auto Fault Finder Ltd – Haldex Mail order parts and ECU repair services (haldexrepairs.co.uk)

I have no affiliation, just a previous customer for a new pump and filter.

If you get a code reader you can keep an eye on any Haldex faults that might crop up.  Regular filter and fluid changes, and cleaning of the pump end strainer will keep the system running well.

Wouldn't trust Skoda, they don't recognise there is a filter to be changed...!   Be careful with VW specialists as I phoned several in my area and none could demonstrate they knew about Haldex, or the filter requirements etc which I found worrying given the amount of 4x4 VAG motors they would likely be working on...

I eventually found a place up here that know about Haldex.

There are write ups on here on how to service the haldex.

If you have a lift - great. I did it on 4 axle stands and it is tight and fiddly.

It is Ecotune Scotland located at Hillington, Glasgow.  They have a website, now used them twice for my Haldex service.
