Octavia Scout 2.0TSI hissing noise on acceleration from driver's (right) side engine compartment

Featured Replies

Hi, have a 2018 Octavia Scout 2.0TSi DSG with 30,000 km. Recently bought from dealer. Noticing a strange hissing/high pitched air sound coming from right side engine compartment, especially in sports mode when accelerating up hills. Sometimes continues for a few sec after taking foot off accelerator. Its unusual and sputters a bit, which makes me think not completely normal. Probably worse when engine cold. Most likely turbo related. Is this normal? Anyone else have it? Do these engines still have waste gait issues?

Car drives well but strong engine smell after driving, possibly related to a small oil leak, so probably not related.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers

Did you get any warranty from the garage? If you did I would take it back.

Hi @Scoutyoda- firstly, welcome to Briskoda.

This sounds familiar to a situation I had where the exhaust clamp to the turbo had come loose as it had been (re-) fitted upside down by the previous garage, causing exhaust gases to leak from the engine bay causing some "engine smell". Car still pulled strongly, but this leak obviously caused a bit more noise and vibration. It was diagnosed in seconds by the guys at QS Tuning down my way, and fixed in a jiffy.

If the conditions and noises are similar to what you say, it might be worthwhile starting logically from induction through to exhaust to see where the leak, if any, is coming from 👍

had the previous owner fitted a diverter valve? 😄

Hi guys, thanks for the welcome, it's a great forum. Haven't been informed about them fitting a diverter valve but will take back to garage. Issue with turbo exhaust clamp sound very plausible actually. Also helpful that it was something that was picked up quickly. It's still under warranty so will aim to take technician on a drive to point it out. Had it in garage earlier but dealer just thought it was normal turbo noise, wasn't in the car when they tested it though.

Thanks again.

Currently in lockdown here in NZ so have to wait a bit more to see mechanic. Do you guys find that the turbo makes much noise on 2.0 TSI in general?

Yes I can hear the normal turbo whistle with the windows down. Quite loud for a standard car compared to other turbo petrols I've had.

I'm impressed you have a Scout with the 2L TSI engine! NZ market only I guess...

Thanks, helpful. See I don’t get a whistle type of turbo sound, more sputtering hiss. Cheers for that.

Right, did not appreciate that, thought they had them in the UK. Both diesel and petrol version of the Scout here. It’s a fun engine - and works well. Just need to iron out some issues which Skoda dealer missed. Not sure if the new Scouts have come out yet.

I had a similar issue a few years back with a mk2 1.9tdi. Under the bonnet there was a split air inlet hose which only revealed itself when the engine was revved and you could see the split as the pipe pressurised a bit. Mind you it had 140k on the clock at the time so couldn't grumble!
