Replacing Grill Trim - Tips?

Featured Replies

Hi,

So I’m finally about to replace the chrome grill trim with a black one ive bought for my VRS, kinda nervous about doing so any tips or advice or even encouragement is very welcome!

There are various how to guides about doing it with the bumper in situ but I found it easier taking the whole bumper off then you can remove it without the risk of breaking anything 👍

The most difficult step is the old grill trim removal.
Removal is fairly easy even bumper in place if it is ok to break the old grill trim.

Some people has removed it without any damage though.

Installing the new one is very easy. Just push it in place.

Avoid touching headlights during removal. Some LED headlights have poor plastic and could potentially crack and then moisture gets in.

I guarantee that you won't be able to remove the old grill in one piece; it is generally a one-way fit.  Struggle removing the old one - fitting the new one is a five mins job.

It is possible but won't be easy. I was lazy and broke the grille frame when changed mine.

Where do you guys buy these black trims to a fair price?

I got a mk3 pre facelift, and really want the chrome to be removed.

What is fair price?

I obtained mine from http://www.kopacek.com/ but it used to be a lot cheaper then.

You can ask from your dealer also.

Taping is one solution also. It could be cheaper.

Lovely site. Could use a fortune in there :D

Although I find it kinda pricey for the trim - but if its genuine and guaranteed fit, then it might not be that expensive? I don't know.

Any other sites like kopacek?

So thanks for replies, been on holiday and just got back. Did try with family member just before I went to try and take old one off but we couldn’t get in enough to confidently dig it out from clips. Just so little give in it and I wasn’t fussed about breaking one I was taking off.

Resigned to asking a local garage to fit it if I can’t do it.

Open the bonnet you can get to the top clips with a screwdriver ,it will break into pieces coming off but if you dont want it so what ,just slide a screwdriver under it after you release top clip ,it took me ten mins to swap mine its very easy to do ,is your car pre facelift .

It’s a facelift, I’m not very good at these things but even with some long screwdrivers and following a couple of YouTube videos we couldn’t get enough leverage and even with a couple of silver clips snapping off it still wasn’t moving at all.

probably just being a bit stupid with it but not good at fiddly stuff like this
