  • Cheers John,  in - laws and their French friend who keeps Sheep on their land did it 2 or 3 months ago and hopefully it's been Sunny and no rain 😀 Re the plates I'll go away and see what the font

  • But let's be honest...   A united kingdom vehicle is just as obvious from a GB plate or a registration plate so a UK sticker would make bugger all difference.

  • Spotted my first UK plate today on a newly registered Ford Puma.

I thought that said totally the opposite? 😕

My take was they don’t change, but obviously the country could ask the UK to update at the UN to whatever they wanted on their behalf at a future date.

I suppose you could take it either way.

You've met the french police right? (I mean you do live there 😜)

British (I guess others too) car in France doing anything at all and it's pull them over and fine them.

The UK plate/sticker is required for travelling through Europe, so I imagine it'll be a field day with this change.

Yes I have met with them on numerous occasions.

You refer to "this change", nothing has changed in Europe, even if they did give a four X about country identifier plates on foreign registered vehicles, which they don't because in 40 years or driving UK reg vehicles in Europe I have never once had a GB plate, a GB or whatever plate that was legal yesterday will still be legal tomorrow, next year and ad infinitum no matter what political message the UK government is trying to convince you to  display.

It is a non story, there really are better things to worry yourself over if worry is your comfort.

I’m not worried, I’m just pointing out the mess after the OPs post.

Certainly in Germany there is a fair chance that driving with an incorrect plate/sticker will at the very least have you advised and the rest of your car checked.

I believe I am supposed to carry a copy of my MOT cert driving in France. When I bought the car a couple of months back at three and a bit years old, the dealer told me if I remember correctly that a paper mot cert isn't produced. I am carrying a link on my phone to the gov site for checking mot.

Surely the relevant page can be printed?

Something we forgot to do

you still get a paper MOT certificate, just printed on plain paper not the fancy old ones, dealer being lazy

I'd prefer to show a Euro cop a piece of paper than something on a phone.

Yes agree. I'm going to get it printed.

Why do you think they would even want to see it assuming that they would understand it?

The traffic laws and fines relating to a countrys roadworthiness test certificate relate to vehicles registered in that country.

If you create an offence by driving an unroadworthy vehicle, bald tyres, no exhaust, no handbrake etc you would be fined for that (or sent on your way) and not because your test certificate is 13 months old in a country where they are valid for 24 months anyway.

Like anyone in another EU country is going to give a four X about whether you have a sticker or not or what it says.

At worst you will get stopped and fined....

For what pray tell?

Do you think any EU country has laws that say a GB sign is an offence but a UK one isn't?

I've no idea tbh but wouldn't it be illegal for a UK car to display a UK plate/ sticker rather than a GB one until it's been ratified and adopted as an official designation by whoever it is that does the ratifying and designating (UN is it?)

I see the Daily Record are reporting that the Liverpool Echo says tomorrow is the big day.

https://dailyrecord.co.uk/lifestyle/huge-number-plate-change-coming-25079542

Stupid headline that is then clarified just below. No way could it 'impact every driver'  if they never take their car abroad!

The new rule change however means that the GB sticker will no longer be valid.

The update has been outlined by the United Nations, which said it had received “a notification stating that the United Kingdom is changing the distinguishing sign that it had previously selected for display in international traffic on vehicles registered in the United Kingdom, from ‘GB’ to ‘UK’”.

Every motorist under the new law will either need to buy the new number plate featuring the letters UK, or make sure they have a sticker displaying the same letters to prevent any punishment.

What a complete load of BS.

What new law?

What punishment?

Ain't no new laws or new punishments in the rest of Europe just because the UK has decided that it wants to be known as the UK and not GB.

Penalties for not complying with the new rules are likely to vary.

Halfords warned that drivers who failed to display their UK badges could be refused entry to some countries.

So its new rules (plural) now and not a new law, I might make up a few myself, they will have as much validity.

Mind you if thats what Halfords says then it must be true, after all they are the arbiters for the whole of the EU border control and justice systems.

It is actually a law @J.R..

@J.R.  Drivers of UK vehicles taking them out of the UK are totally free to not have the UK identifier on the registration plate or a UK sticker on the rear of the vehicle.

Nobody in the UK are going to be doing anything to stop them drive onto a ferry or train.

They are adult people that can take responsibility for their own actions.

If anyone has any issue on roads outwith the UK that is their problem and maybe they can just say this is BS.

Rules or Regulations but no laws.   What is the worst that can happen?

Clearly displaying the country of origin of your vehicle is an international requirement and if you are stopped by French police without one you can be issued with an on-the-spot fine (although it’s unclear how bothered French police will be about the intricacies of UK v GB).

I suppose some outlets use the terms 'law' and 'rule' interchangeably. A fine is a punishment is it not?  'Could be' means 'possibly' IMO but I doubt entry would be refused by all but the most finickity.

£1.99 for a UK sticker to put on the rear of a vehicle and job done.   Haters can swerve Halfords if they want.    Edit. £1.49 even.

Then please show me this new law, its jurisdiction and the penalties, I assume that it would equally apply to me next week in the UK driving my French registered car.

There is no change for you driving your French car in the UK.

Why would you need a UK sticker on a French registered car? Carry on using your EU 'F' marked plate as normal.

I used a magnetic GB some of the time in France. On the ferry over and return we saw about 50% of UK vehicles with GB/UK signs. Someone suggested applying a UK sticker to my magnetic GB. That's what I will do next time. I would not be happy if this 'so called' government told me I had to change my EU badged number plates. Hope the silliness stops short of that.
