Michelin has released the cross climate 2 in Europe in 107 sizes

Replaces the original and plus versions

It's actually 66 sizes, not 107 sizes as shown below. However, the CrossClimate 2 is often available in more than one version of each size such as different speed ratings and load indexes making a total of 107 different versions:

225/45R18 could be used instead of 215/45R18.

 

225/45R18 has a 0.4% bigger outside diameter than 205/55R17.

 

The Octavia MK3 uses a 7J rim width for it's 225/45 tyre and the Kamiq uses the same 7J rim width for it's 215/45 tyre.

Yes I agree that could put a different size on Kamiq (and Arona and T-cross)

 

But they still come with 18 inch rims in UK, so have to buy extra rims if you want smaller wheels.  Surely 225/45 R18 is about 1.6% bigger than 215/45 R18 and is too big for spare wheel well.

 

So although there are ways around, the default size is rather annoying as it is limited in all season.  It seems vanity has overtaken practically as same engines get 16 or 17 inch wheels elsewhere so clearly don’t need the non-standard tyre size 18s.

 

With at least different models getting 215/45 R18 do have to wonder why Michelin didn’t make that size.

Outside diameter of 225/45R18 tyre is 659.7mm

 

Outside diameter of 205/55R17 is 657.3mm

 

Outside diameter of 215/45R18 tyre is 650.7mm

 

So 225/45R18 has a 1.4% bigger outside diameter than 215/45R18.

 

But if you compare the 225/45R18 size to 205/55R17 (another standard tyre size) the difference is only 0.4%.

 

The difference between the outside radius of a 225/45R18 tyre and a 215/45R18 tyre is 4.5mm.

 

The difference between the width of a 225/45R18 tyre and a 215/45R18 tyre (when they are both fitted to a 7J rim width) is about 7mm NOT the 10mm which you might expect.

Notice that the above 225/45R18 chart shows the tyre width when fitted to a 7.5J rim, but if fitted to a 7J rim it will only be about 220mm in width, ie. only 7mm wider than the 215/45R18 tyre.

Auto Bild has done a comparison with215/65 R17 size (an SUV rather than car size), and is on tyre reviews.   Cross Climate 2 came second
