Skoda Navigation or Waze?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, in a predicament.

I'm doing a long trip soon. I usually use android auto and Waze, but I'm unsure whether the car will use the Waze navigation data to automatically adjust the way the car uses the hybrid system for optimal fuel use, or whether I need to use the built in navigation for that. The manual doesn't really say much, just says it uses navigation data.

Anybody able to shed some light on this?

Kind regards.

I drive a 1.5tsi, so the following may not apply but hopefully some indication of the cars behaviour…

The Eco tips displayed in the virtual cockpit come up with things like ‘lift foot off accelerator’ and are accompanied with a symbol depicting a downhill, a 30 limit, a junction or a roundabout. This can only come from the navigation database as I don’t have road sign recognition.

This behaviour was without using the built in SatNav for route guidance.

On that basis, I’d like to think the hybrid system will self tune based on the database whether or not it is used for route guidance.

Hope that helps…

The eco tips and the auto braking etc. have nothing to do with how the car utilises the hybrid system though, it wouldn't know when the best time is to use the battery or the ICE if you don't have the sat nav engaged as it wouldn't know your planned route.

As per the ops question though, I would also be interested to know if it can use waze to decide how to best use the hybrid system, I've only used it once and that was with the built in nav.

The auto-braking is part of the ACC/SpeedLimiter and nothing to do with the eco-tips.

My car knows when I’m approaching a roundabout, a downhill etc and eco-tips suggests lifting foot off the accelerator. That can only come from the navigation database.

So, if the hybrid system can self tune, it may be able to use the navigation Db when approaching a long descent regardless of route guidance or not; or whether Waze is in use or not.

The OP referred to the manual stating it use Navigation data. My experience tells me my 1.5tsi uses navigation data for eco tips.

Mine slows down for roundabouts and Junctions even if I have the ACC / Limiter disengaged, it won't bring the car to a stop like ACC does behind traffic but it definitely applies the brakes at roundabouts and junctions. I do know you can completely deactivate ACC by pushing the small stalk all the way back, I'm not sure if this stops the car from slowing down at junctions etc?

I probably wasn't overly clear what I meant in my previous post so I'll try again.

I appreciate that when in hybrid mode the car will use the battery when you're at slower speeds or you're barely touching the accelerator however, I believe it can be smarter than this with the skoda sat nav engaged. As an example, my car doesn't charge the battery while driving (except regen braking) but with the sat nav engaged, I've noticed that about 10 miles from home the charge bar suddenly fills and it stays like that until I have 3 miles of range back in the battery, this is obviously for when I get to town and the ICE can cut out. If I don't have the sat nav on, the battery doesn't charge as it doesn't know where I'm heading.

What the OP wants to know is whether or not Waze provides the same functionality or if it only works with the built in sat nav.

That makes sense now, thanks.

And interesting to read that it automatically uses the regen braking to decelerate the car on approaches to roundabouts etc - for more practical use than an eco-tip!
