My son has just bought a 2012 VRS with18" alloys  but it doesn't  come with a space saver.

 

I have been looking on Ebay for him and there seems to be loads for Golfs and Audis, will these fit?

You could use a 6.5Jx16 ET50 5/112 57.1 steel rim fitted with a 205/55R16 tyre as a spare.
