hi all,

was just wondering, does anyone else have tesco broadband.

im still having problems with it running slow. its only at night and slightly slower at the weekend. basically from around 5-6pm ish it gets slow then later at night its ok. during the day is fine. sounds like their servers or something cant cope? am i the only one with this problem?

have spybot, adaware, avg all come up clear and windows defender thingy

I run it without any problems, are you running 512 or 1meg ??

I don't have Tesco BB, but it does sound like a contention issue, as you may know your bandwidth is shared with up to 50 other users on the basis that not everyone will use it at the same time. Consequently at busy times you may not be getting all the bandwidth you would expect and this can lead to slowdowns.

When you go to the bottom bar and put the cursor over the icon for the two monitors, what mbps speed does it show ??

That's interesting Gerry...Tesco only do upto 1Mbps. ;) I suspect you're looking at the throughput of your router. My wireless connection says 54Mbps.:D

I have Tesco and have seen a degradation in speed in the evenings. This will more than likely be down to contention....the time you state is generally the time that most people will want to use the Internet.

So you will have a "pipe" which is shared amongst several Tesco BB users...in off-peak times minimal people will use the pipe and download speads will be good...however during peak times more people will use the pipe and you will get less of it.

Unfortunately no.....Tesco set the ratio....unless of course you can get your fellow Tesco users to get off the Net. ;)

I find 6pm and 9pm tend to be the worst times.

Are you on the 1Mb service...I'm still running the 512K service....will wait until all providers are doing 8M before changing....you really don't notice the change in downloads speed when changing from 512k to 1M.

Most suppliers have the same contention ratio (50:1), some seem to have better capacity management though - if you wanted to pay to have a lower contention then some ISPs offer that but the cost is outrageous.

Have a look at www.adslguide.org.uk - it has a handy guide to compare costs / features of all the ISPs and also a speedtester so that you can find out what speed you are actually getting.

For an accurate speed test try this from BT http://speedtester.bt.com/cgi-bin/home.page.pl

Best to try it several times at different times of the day. If it shows very slow speeds then make a complaint, if tesco are like other ISPS they will probably blame BT. Tesco may however be able to get BT to increase the gain on your line or investigate further, it can help but not always.

Should point out though that this speed test tests your line only - it bypasses your ISP and makes a direct connection to BT wholesale - it may be handy to show what you should be getting. I don't think it will help if you are the victim of contention issues as these are more to do with the ISP.

You might want to open up the task manager and check if any other processes are running.

Doesn't sound so good - if I understand the speed test correctly the BT one will be testing your line speed and the load at the exchange but obviously not take into account any congestion with your ISP...from the looks of your result it must be general congestion at the exchange so switching ISP wouldn't help.

Note: I've just visited that speedtester and it lets you test your ISPs speed as well, which did you do? Disconnect and enter BT details or just tested with your normal ISP connection details?

It's definately contention, you could try changing to a different supplier that has better ratios. For instance BT offer a Business Broadband service with a 20:1 Ratio for £29.99 per month.
