Headlamp bulb dipped beam

Featured Replies

Hi all, advice please , I have a dipped beam bulb gone ( only 14 months old) recommendations please, I don’t care about ice white or blue etc …. Just a bulb that’s legal and does a damn good job lighting the road up on low beam. The last ones I bought claimed to be way brighter than standard but I don’t think they lit the road as well. Thx

My wife's night sight is a bit challenged these days and I fitted a pair of Osram Nightbreakers a little while back which she says have improved the headlamp illumination significantly.

i just bought h7 bulbs today, osram long life, 4 year warranty, these have a good pattern, for standard look bulbs very good, £11 from ecp,

as above night breakers are very good, ive got them in my fiesta,

or try phillips racingvision GT200, got them in my nissan note, abSOLUTELY fantastic bulbs, feels like im drivING in day light

I always use the website Autobulbs Direct. Their prices are good, they have the Osram Nightbreaker bulbs (some variety of Phillips bulb often gets better reviews in Autoexpess's testing, but are usually significantly more expensive, and the Nightbreakers seem to me to be good enough, and clear improvement over standard ).

There is a trade-off between intensity and bulb life, so you have to be a bit careful about which exact bulb you buy as the big manufacturers tend to have a selection of different trade-offs available.

Also, 'plus 50% (or whatever)' bulbs tend to look a bit brighter, but not as much as it indicates on the box. This seems to be due to the way they are allowed to make claims - you can choose the distance that suits you best, and claim that your bulb is a certain percentage brighter there, which will not be the same as that percentage brighter everywhere.

Latest version of the Osram Nightbreaker series, but take note than "N% brighter" translates into "Sqrt(N) more range". So, for example 50% brighter means than a 100m range becomes 107m.

I put a spare bulb that I originally replaced back in, more of a yellow light , the ones I put in last year said they were 50% brighter than standard but actually with one of those on the driver side and my old bulb on the left, the left side is way better at actually lighting the road than the right… to the point I actually thought my right hand bulb had gone yesterday when driving as it was so rubbish …. They were Halfords own 50% brighter white light bulbs , I’ll get some of these night breakers I think

Just been and bought some hella ultra 150s , very good , def light the road better than anything I’ve had before

All road legal halogen bulbs are legally limited to 1500 lumen ± 10%. Upgrade bulbs are whiter because they run hotter but all have substantially shorter life as a result. In a projector headlight like the Octavia you're unlikely to see that much difference as the main way they claim higher brightness/longer throw is by moving the filament position so the illumination hotspot is further in the distance, but this only applies if the bulb is in a reflector housing of standard design.
