Help with determining proper dampers for 3T Superb, rough roads

Featured Replies

Hi,

It seems that I have to replace dumpers in my 2015 3T Superb II Estate (CFGB, 4x4). The thing is that considering that it is a 4x4 estate with heavy duty suspension and also there are quite a couple of other parameters of the suspension @ etka, I have some trouble determining the proper part numbers for dumpers for my car. My codes are: 0YG (Weight range 7 installation control only, no requirement forecast), 1JB (Rear shock absorption, heavy-duty version), G56 (Shock absorption in front), PSW (rough road package).

According to the above, it seems that front dumper should have the number of:
3C0 413 031 BB
There are different manufacturers here: Sachs, KYB, TRW, Bilstein. Either one of them should be good, right?

In relation to the rear dumpers, it is more complicated:
In etka they provide two numbers: 3C0 513 049 BN for the codes of 0YB,0YC,0YD,0YE,0YF and 3C0 513 049 BP for the codes of 0YK,0YH,0YJ. The problem is that my code is 0yG, so it isn't listed by any of those - which number is correct for my car then? Moreover, both part numbers (either BN or BP) have very few hits in the online shops, just as they were not really common or discontinued or so. I only was able to find something exotic like dampers from trw, optimal, gabriel.

Last thing: assuming tha the springs are not broken, what should be reasonably changed along with the dampers themselves?

If you are looking for aftermarket rear shock absorbers, you don't need to know whether your car has 3C0513049BN or 3C0513049BP OEM part numbers if you go with TRW JGT1054T as that aftermarket rear shock absorber is sold to replace both these OEM part numbers. However, also consider Optimal A-1434G and VAICO V10-4256 as these are sold to replace 3C0513049BP.

autodoc list just a TRW to replace 3C0513049BN and just Vaico, Optimal, and the same TRW to replace 3C0513049BP.

However, as with most aftermarket shock absorbers, it's a bit of a one size fits all approach...or at least each aftermarket shock absorber is often sold to replace a huge number of different OEM part numbers. This means that an aftermarket shock absorber might not even be a close match to the original.

KYB for example, sell just one front shock absorber to replace ANY front shock absorber on the Superb MK2. It doesn't matter to KYB whether your car has standard suspension, sports suspension, heavy duty suspension, or increased ride height suspension. Clearly, KYB aren't too concerned about selling you a close match to the original. But this problem isn't just limited to KYB...it's an industry wide problem.

Notice that the Vaico is sold to replace the same 20 OEM part numbers as the Optimal. The Vaico is also sold to replace an additional 4 OEM part numbers that the Optimal is not sold to replace. I've put these additional 4 at the end of Vaico's list, ie. 561513049, 561513049B, 561513049C, 561513049D.

1JA - Standard Suspension

1JB - Heavy Duty Suspension

1JC - Sports Suspension

1JD - Higher Ride Height Suspension

I would avoid Optimal A-1434G and Vaico V10-4256 as they are both being sold as replacements for 1JA, 1JB, and 1JC type suspensions...ie. a one part fits all type approach.

TRW JGT1054T looks like a better option as it is being sold as a replacement for just 1JA and 1JB type suspensions. However, I suspect the TRW JGT1054T is simply a 1JA type shock absorber so you may be better off looking for quality rear shock absorbers that are sold to replace 3C0513049CP rather than the TRW rear shock absorbers.

Notice from the above chart that TRW also do a TRW JGT589T that according to the specification on autodoc is of similar compressed and uncompressed length to the TRW JGT1054T model. I would guess that the TRW JGT1054T has stiffer damping to the TRW JGT589T model.

I would put Sachs 311 346 rear shock absorbers on my shortlist. You can use them with standard springs, sports springs, higher ride height springs, and probably the heavy duty springs. About £80 for the pair on amazon.de (the German version of Amazon).

Definitely replace the rear foam bump stops, they may already have decomposed, if so then check to make sure that someone has not removed the damper rod cover to stop it rattling, if they are absent then add them to the list, otherwise they are fine to reuse with the new bump stops.

Just had my back end up in the air (ooh er missus) to do dome paint and repsir work to inner arch. Took photo of rear shocks - sachs units. My car is lowered (from new) and had uprated shocks fitted. Codes etc in the photo….

3rd photo showing a good example of a decomposed bumpstop which will lead to premature spring & damper failure as well as giving a very harsh ride when carrying loads or rear seat passengers.

First of all: Gentlemen, you are all gold!

Even though, I have seen those numbers with genuine Skoda number parts myself, your analysis of the aftermarkets that cover each part helped me to figure out what I'll do. I decided to go with Bilstein, as those seems to have good feedback wherever I read about them. I chose 19-151069 for the rear damper vs 083, thinking that if it's used for the raised height damper version (and for one of the options for the standard height too), those should be good. Covers and bumstops also ordered.

One question, should I replace the coil springs too? I don't want to replace the whole car and invest significant amounts in that car, but I don't want to be unreasonable too.
