Strange knocking sound

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Just changed both top mounts, drop links, tie rod ends and ball joints.

I still have annoying knocking and clunking sound. Been over everything double checking but still get a clunk.

Going over speed bumps is fine, it when you have a rut in the road its a nasty clunk thud.

Checking anti roll bar bushes last night after ordering new bushes, but its a sealed bracket type stupidly meaning you have to change whole bar unless someone can tell me otherwise or a short cut.

Bushes didn't show any visible signs and couldn't find play in them.

Only thing left is lower control arm. Can it really be that.

I have ordered arms anyway but last night couldn't find any significant play in them, but the way it sounds i was expecting to find them broken

Any help will be much appreciated

Update

Changed lower arms today. Made a huge difference on a decent road but if you find a rut or dropped manhole im still getting a clunk.

Im now really confused. The siund is at the top so i dont think it's the anti roll bar bushes, (but need someone to tell they can be changed and there is an easier way now that i have the bushes).

Im gonna change the shocks (but really dont want to have to) but anyone think it could be them.

Did you look at inner and outer CV joints?

It was the balljoints in the end. Lasted only 3 weeks made by moog

I have a similar noise - can I check your symptoms to see if its likely to be the same thing please?

On a good road there is no rattle / thud but if I go down a badly paved road (my local town roads for instance) I get a constant knocking noise - sounds like metal on metal clunk. It drives well with no noticeable pulling, diving or handling issues.  Local Skoda garage (Motorline Medway - previously Sherlodge) had it for a day and could replicate the noise but couldn't identify it.  The noise is offside front but I can't narrow it down further than that.

My car is a 2012 Superb 2.0TDI 4x4.

Any help so I can look myself or have the garage look again would be appreciated.

One last thing - about 100 miles before the noise started the garage replaced the water pump / timing belt and front pads and discs so I am not ruling out something not going back properly after that, but as I said they had it back in for a day and couldnt find / rectify the fault.

Thanks, Neil.

Most metallic knocks will be drop links.

Main culprits are top mount balljoints and drop links. For what its worth the lower arm is easy to do and will need doing if it hasn't been done

Thanks - I have ordered drop links and will try these first.

If you've had your pads changed check the inner pad that clips in to the caliper they rattle and make an awefull knocking noise if not really tightly clip in I had same problem it took me weeks to suss it out

So I changed the drop link (after having to go out to buy the M6 bit that I could have sworn I had but didn't.....).  No change.  At reddy's suggestion I also started looking at the brakes and the inner pad was clipped in properly but when I went to reassemble it I realised there was no outside anti rattle clip / spring installed at all on that side.  Now fitted and no rattle!

One final question - as I have now changed the drop link on one side should I go ahead and change the other side also - I was always taught to do suspension in pairs but that was mostly shocks and springs. As I have probably replaced a good drop link do I need to do the other side?  Just asking for opinions.

Some people don't. I always do pairs

Hi. I had something similar on mine and it was shocks. So bot front shocks done and mounting struts.
