Manual 6 speed gearbox oil change

Featured Replies

I have a garage booked for a couple of weeks to change the oil on my six speed manual. Car has always had a bit of a wine in first I would be interested to see if this does anything to dampen down. I would attempt it myself as it looks pretty straightforward but have no way of working on the car raised while level.

Going to supply official VW oil part number G052171A2 , capacity is 2.3 L. (€75 plus €60 for the labour.).  Skoda wanted €250 for the job.

The garage doing the work is happy for me to watch and to see the quality of the oil that comes out.

Will update when done.

AA would work better....

@Steviedakota How many miles on the clock has your Superb and what is the engine version?

When is your oil change planned?

Just looking forward to reading the results and benefits. ;)

80,000km, 2015, 1.4tsi.  Being done next Monday, will update with results.

Can't see it making any difference tbh, no harm in trying I suppose.

No arm in trying for sure, but always skeptical to see that DSG gearboxes require oil change every 60000 km whereas oil for manual gearboxes doesn’t require any service at all.
DSG gearbox is a bit a piece of watchmaking, but I assume oil change at 120000 for instance (twice less) for a manual gearbox should be a clever decision.

I ‘ve asked the same for my wife’s Q3 (also manual gearbox equipped) and the workshop manager looked at me as a cow watch the train rolling by or as if I was speaking an old dialect from a remote part of China... 😟

I was met by the same reaction from two Indies. As I said before it's a cheap enough job and I plan to hold on to the car for a few years still so worth it to me. Let's see if there is any noticeable improvement.

DSG boxes are under a huge amount of pressure and heat so it breaks the oil down.

A manual gearbox is not under nearly as much pressure and is simply 'sloshed' around the gearbox and between the gears so doesnt wear nearly as fast.

That being said id say 100k is a fair life for manual transmission fluid

I think we say the same in different ways. 😉

Update:

Just over a litre of very black, thin oil came out, just over 2 litres went in. I'm not sure if this car had a gearbox leak prior to my ownership, it has been fine since I have owned it but the state of the oil was terrible.

Very glad I got this done.

😯 Much darker than new oil, isn’t it?

I didn’t notice such a « Guiness-like » oil, when I changed the oil of my DSG6 upon 60000 km.
Good thing, that you changed it.

Did you notice any improvement in the behavior of your manual gearbox?

Smoother ? Quiter may be ?

It does feel quieter and smoother. I was getting a whine in first under acceleration, still there but more muted now. Shift action also feels a bit better. €45 labour, €70 for the oil. Well worth it.

Thanks for this. I am going to do the same with my gearbox as it is approaching 120,000 miles of service.
