Sort of; it's more that they get "quietly noisy" when an oil change is due.

thankyou,interesting , I changed the oil 3000 miles ago but used castrol edge which  has a lower viscosity at the lower temperature.

As long as the oil meets VW 504/507 grades, you should be fine.  I personally recommend going with original oil - Lifelife LEIII 0W30 oil.
