new car engine smell

Featured Replies

Hi All

Picked up our brand new Karoq on on Tuesday. love it, but occasionally getting a smell of burning. Seems from engine and in cabin. Im reading it's likely to be factory residue burning off, but just hoping for some reassurance here if anyone knows

Thanks

Maybe exhaust burning off some residue

Yeah it's just wax/oil residues burning off. You might even get a little light coloured smoke but try not to be alarmed by that, it happens too.

You shouldn't get it for more than a couple of weeks if you're driving fairly regularly or maybe more than a month if you're not using the car much.

Thank you, great to know. Will keep an eye on it for now.

Also wanted to ask if we should go easy on the revs during the first few hundred miles? It used to be a thing, especially with motorbikes, but I suspect things (engines, designs) have changed a lot since then. No mention of it from the dealer

Exhaust manifolds are often oiled when new. If you do a couple of 10 mile trips at NSL, that should burn off.

Quoting from the paper copy of the manual, which you should have, page 16 in mine.

'During the first 1000km, rev the engine to max. 3/4 of the highest permissible engine speed and avoid using a trailer. Over the 'next 500km the engine speed can be slowly increased.

It also warns that the tyres do not have optimum grip for the first 500km and brakes do not provide optimum braking for the first 200km, 'Therefore drive very carefully'

The manual also recommends rotation of tyres front to back after 10,000km (page 157)

Could be worse. I had a new Ford XR2 in the 1980’s- stank for months as construction solvents evaporated. The dashboard surface was still tacky to the touch for several weeks although it didn’t actually mark when touched!

thanks all. already seems to be getting better. Will keep the revs easy then. As for the xr2, god that brings back memories - never owned one - but similar with golf gti early 90's. love the karoq but no chance i'll be workiing on the engine like I did the golf!

Ah! the smell of a new car. After 8 years my Roomster still has the showroom smell especially on a hot summers day. I doubt you will rev the engine into the danger zone as that is three-quarters of the rev band when new.  During the first 1000 miles and forever avoid labouring the engine. It is preferrable to drive at higher revs lightly loading the engine than slogging along at low revs in a higher gear.
