Karoq vs IKEA

Featured Replies

The other day we took a trip to IKEA to get various items.

The last time we went we were driving an Octavia.

As is standard with IKEA everything is flat packed and quite long.

On arrival back at the car park it suddenly became obvious that the two (Billy) book cases we had bought might prove to be a problem fitting in the car!

I had to remove the left hand rear seat (have to love the Varioflex seating option), which was put in the boot.

Then I had to fold down the centre seat.

Finally the front seat had to be pushed all the way forward and reclined.

Now... this is where an issue appears. The seat does not lie flat, neither can you remove the head rest.

Consequently the two boxes ended up resting on the top of the head rest and were inclined from inside the boot up to within a few inches of the headlining at the front.

Fortunately all the other ‘small’ stuff that one collects as you wander around could be slotted into the remaining space.

The Wife had to ride home in the rear offside passenger seat!

She did say it was very comfortable however.

I’m, not sure if this arrangement is beneficial or not.

Having a proper ‘back seat driver’ as opposed to one who sits next to you seems to be worse....

The moral of this story?

If you go to IKEA a lot, buy an Octavia.

Alternatively, you could buy a trailer - which is what we did on the way home!

(I have to add, the trailer is not primarily for IKEA shopping, we needed one in any case)

Did you know there is a hidden button on the back of the seat to remove the headrest. Below is taken from the workshop manual "Karoq 2018 ➤ General body repairs, interior - Edition 12.2017". Quite why they would hide it is beyond logic though - you would imagine that the emergency services might need to be able to locate it in the event of an accident and hiding it like this must be a bit of a hinderence (not to mention inconvenient for the odd Ikea or "Mole Valley Farmers" trip).:

I must say that compared to Octavia my current Karoq can carry 2 sets of wheels thanks to the varioflex seats.

In addition this summer I had to transport a desk 160x80cm and all I had to do is remove 2 of the rear seats and push the passenger seat forward and it fit nicely.

I used to have Octavia estate and I did a lot of Ikea trips and my current Karoq is not much worse of space, just the times (Corona) and the number of children has changed 😂

AGREED, the height of the boot area is much better in the Karoq, which means that larger objects can be easily transported, my issue was with the length of the boxes.

I will check out the button to remove the head rest...

Tried to find a button on our 2021 Edition, leather heated seats, but couldn't find it. Any ideas if the restraints can be removed on these seats?

Hmm

Just had a closer look at our 2021 SEL - Alcantara / heated seats.

Same here - just a button to release the headrest (within a limited range of adjustment).

No button in the back of the seat.

Is the button underneath the seat back material? I guess Skoda wouldn't surface mount it as it could  prove to be a great 'toy' for young back seat passengers to play with.

In the post above which shows the diagram oof the location of the button it says that it is under on the back of the backrest, so it appears that it is hidden from rear seat passengers.

I "think" it's a hidden button - that is what the manual suggests.  I have never actually tried this mind.  I just found reference to the process on a German Karoq forum when I was perusing and I got the workshop manual from a friendly post on here somewhere if I recall.  Note that the manual is for Karoq 2018 onwards but it is quite possible that the manual has been superceded for the later models.  You would have to ask around for the updated manual if that were the case.  The one I have a copy of is:

I would be very surprised (even if it has been updated) if there is not a process to remove the restraint.  The method may have changed but I bet there is a way.

Here is a post with the manuals if it helps.  you could ask there if anyone knows of updated manuals 🙂

I just went out to check my seats (same as yours I think - Leather/Alacantra with heated seat) and the button is there and it works.  You have to go by feel and press in quite a long way in  (over 2.5cm) and you need to be pulling up on the headrest while pressing in.  It's not really a button - more of an "area" where there is a point you can depress a little more than the area around it.  Spring loaded which is why you have to pull the headrest up at the same time.

Hope that helps.

Paul

I had an Ikea delivery of 29 items to pick up last month. I wish I'd taken photos. I had already taken the rear seats right out but due to the length of some of the items, had to push the front passenger seat right forward. I got it all in.

I have to say though, I don't find the Karoq as handy for space as my Octavia or Roomster. The Roomster was best as it's effectively a van already but I got quite an amount of odd shaped things into my Octavia hatch as well.

I'm pretty sure I have figured this out. On all of the cars I have had before the front head restraints had the metal supports built into the head restraint and on adjustment the supports move in and out of the seat back. Our Karoq is different. The supports are a fixed part of the the seat, and the restraint goes up and down on the supports. So the best that you can possibly do is to remove the restraint and leave the metal supports sticking out of the seats. If you think about it, the button on the side of the restraint is a bit of a give-away.

No quite correct.  To put this to bed once and for all I just removed my head restraint.  Yes the top bit slides up and down on the struts but the struts also come right out if you press down in teh secret button area.  :
