DIY Turbo Overhaul

Featured Replies

Anyone know if this is possible for the octy RS turbo?

Don't know if there is an off the shelf kit for the kkk turbos but if there was and it was a simple thing to do and kits where cheap then i'd be tempted to have a go as i've got two blown ko3s's in my loft that i've done  i have seen kits for other makes of turbos but to be honest your probably better off getting a recon unit from a turbo supplier on an exchange basis because if you got a kit and didn't build it up correctly then i suppose it could blow and cause serious damage to the engine:eek:

I have re-cond 3 Garrett T3's now with no problems. I bought kits from Turbo Technics at about £60 each. I think they do them for the KKK turbos. When you see how crude a turbo is and how slack the tolerances are for the bearings, you wont think twice about doing it yourself. All I would say though is to make sure you mark the position of the impellor wheel before you remove it and make sure it goes back in exactly the same place to ensure the shaft is as balanced as is possible without going on a dynamic balancing machine. I have had no failures doing it this way.

I know of turbo technics, I'll make an enquiry about the kits for the k03. If the job's done correctly it can't be bad right?

Having worked for a company that made turbo parts (turbine housings, compressor housings and centre bodies) I can safely say the turbos are not crude and the tolerances within them are immensely tiny, the bearings should have slack in them at all and if yours have then...

Just picture an impellor shaft doing 100,000rpm with even a few microns of play in it!

the turbo's on the octavia vRS run on oil bearing thingies and not roller bearings so they are supposed to have play in when not in use :)
