Best Cambelt make

Featured Replies

Hi,

Having only recently purchased a 16 plate 1.2 TSI SE (18,000 miles) and on reading here that it is due a Cambelt change at 5 years, I wonder which make of cambelt is said to be the best.

My understanding is that the materials vary make to make.

Thanks

Get the official Skoda spare part. Any savings in buying third party just aren’t worth it.

I get that but from this forum that could be made by any of several manufacturers.

I personally use Gates and INA and have never had a problem, both are/have been OE suppliers to the VAG group.
If you take the car to Skoda, chances are it will come out with one of them on, they just cost a bit more than independents.

The best option would be to speak to the person who will be fitting it, see what they would be happy to fit and warranty their work on.
I believe the INA part number you would need is 530 0592 10 / 530 0592 11 superseded to include the bolts from memory.

Fabulous, just the sort of info I was after. I will be using an Indy garage in the Bristol area. Just have not decided which one yet.

Always good to have a little knowledge before hand.

I bought a Bosch kit which included belt, tensioners, all fixings and water pump - I used Autodoc, price was nice, delivery 10 days.

Apparently don't need water pump as not on same belt hence part of the reason for the question?

I am trying to ascertain from experience of users if one make of belt is better (longevity) than another.

Regards

The pump is separate on these, so just the belt kit will do.

In theory they should all last the service interval period, I personally go for the OEM suppliers for peace of mind.

I'm in the trade and have fitted Gates, INA, Dayco and Continental. I just prefer INA and Gates as the kits just tend to be more comprehensive. Brands are always personal preference, I've known some garages to refuse to fit or warranty their work on certain brands, hence the suggestion to check with the installer.

Many thanks

I would welcome some idea of the prices you get quoted for the cam belt replacement. Mine will need doing next year so some idea of charges would be helpful.

Thanks

Wow - anybody else got it done cheaper?

Hi,

Was quoted £395 inc vat from VAG centre Bristol. Trying to get a couple more quotes.

£395 supply and fit is decent for a specialist, especially if that is genuine parts.

I changed my partners (same engine different model), I think the book time was quoted at 3hours from memory, it certainly didn't take long.
I would say your labour cost alone will be £150-250 depending on the garages rate, most are £50-80ph.

Then you have part cost and the what ever mark-up the garage adds, I paid £62.50 for an INA as it was more half the price of genuine.

Thanks - Skoda dealers here (North Yorkshire) are all quoting exactly the same - £500.

Hi,

These quotes are independent VAG specialists, not main dealers.

Hi,

At the 5 year service late last year my local Skoda dealer recommended that I have the cambelt on my Octavia 1.4 TSI replaced (it's done 50k miles). I was told it would be "about £500". I didn't agree to it at the time as I wanted to think about it. I approached them last week for a quote and was told it would be £768.

Not sure what's going on there, but now looking into finding an independent garage to do it, assuming that it's actually something that a general garage would manage (I haven't started checking yet).

£429 at my local VAG independent!
