Quick haldex question

Featured Replies

Hi i purchased a 2012 superb 4x4 with 58k. I noticed when pulling away in the wet i got a bit of wheelspin, put the car on a ramp today in work and into drive. Got the 2 front wheels turning, the n/s/r wheel turning but the o/s/r wheel is turning very slowly. Does this sound normal? Thanks in advance.

Yes if one brake is dragging slightly.

I too have detected some front wheelspin this week after changing to ditchfinder winter tyres with very little wet grip, I was trying to get it to test the Haldex, it was only partial the car did turn across the junction rather than sitting there spinning the inside wheel but the wheelspin was continuous.

So I tried the vehicle in a straight line on wet cobblestones, uphill on slippery tracks & canal slipways and each time after a tiny amount of front wheel slippage all 4 wheels got traction and it acelerated quicker than turning across a T junction despite far less grip. I was going to create a thread but instead will tag on yours.

Try the straight line tests above as I did and please report back, my Haldex seems to be only partially engaging under certain conditions, perhaps beyond a certain steering angle, if not then the pump screen is again blocked, I cleaned it and changed the oil 22K miles and 20 months ago.

Thank you for the reply. Theres no sign of any haldex service in the history so will order some oil and a filter today. I will try another test with it today and let you know how i get on. Thanks

Haldex - I wonder if there's a Norse saga of the same name.  🤔     I recently saw a pic of a Haldex 5 gauze strainer that was clogged at 20k miles.   On that basis and the advice of my local indy VAG specialist, my wife's Karoq is going in there next week at just under 20k miles for a Haldex service.

I have bitter experience with Haldex after following the Skoda dealer service routine and having the fluid changed as per the schedule.

Skoda do not change the removable filter or demount the pump to clean the strainer.  This will lead to early pump failure and inevitable 4x4 failure.

With no service history at all I would be changing the filter, remove the pump/test and clean the strainer and fill with fresh fluid.

With luck your pump will be ok, I wasn't so lucky and had to get it replaced.

Skoda's service procedures don't have the Gen 4 filter on their system so it never gets done.

The links below are very useful and those who have been on here a while will have seen my rants before on Haldex 😃

I am now doing a Haldex service every 2 years or say 16 - 18k miles.

If you have a code reader (Carista or similar) you can check for any codes for the 4x4 system and compare to the info in the links below.

Cheers Dave

I am at 2 years and 20K miles since cleaning the filter and changing the oil, the weather and my current working conditions are not the best for doing the work, at your current service regime how blocked does the filter look and what is the condition of the oil drained please?

I might compromise with a clean and top up but not fluid change.

I don't do the work directly as have no facilities but the garage I use showed me the filter upon request and it was certainly showing a fair bit of debris.  The fluid weeping out was brown/golden and I believe it is clear when new.

The fluid isn't too expensive, I would be tempted to do everything, otherwise if you are doing 20K intervals your fluid will be in longer than the Skoda schedule which I think is 30k miles from memory.

Its certainly something 4x4 owners need to keep an eye on.  All the best...

Fluid is expensive here, cheaper imported from Germany but with significant delivery costs, discolouring is normal & I dont mind extending the interval in that case but if it has significant clutch plate material in suspension it will just clog the filter quicker.

The fluid has an easy job and you can smell if it has overheated, something that should never happen as the clutch cannot slip and burn out like the drivetrain clutch.

Good point re the 30 interval, the old fluid had done 80K and it was pretty good, the filter very sludged up though.

Well confirmed today i only have fwd. We had snow today so tested it out. Ive ordered a new pump, filter  and oil for it. Does anyone know if the bosch kts diagnostic kit will bleed/purge the system? Thats the diagnostic we use in work. Thanks for all the replies.

Cycling the ignition will purge the system and you will hear the pump running if you leave the door open and there is not constant background noise like the traffic passing my place.

Never knew that would work. All ive seen and read is you need vcds/ software to purge it! Thanks

It worked on my 2015, I dont know if it will for all generations of Haldex controller but logic says it should for any that are the pre-emptive type, the system must be primed and the accumulator pressurised ready for when the engine starts, it could be that you are fleeing for your life from a Zombie Apocolypse and will dump the clutch at high revs!

Pump does not run on mine on key
Have to use Autel, delphi  or VCDS to control it

Also @Chops13should maybe of taken for a diagnostic to make sure power is going to pump as wires can corrode up there

Did you use Haldex repair for parts

I didn't use any parts, O rings were fine & I have most sizes as spares and have a splice kit, no renewable filter just clean the gauze screen, only oil needed.

Just to clarify, if you have Gen 4 Haldex, there is a replaceable filter cartridge to be changed.  Skoda do not have this on there service detail but it is there.

Correct about removing the pump and cleaning the gauze screen, but there is a filter also to be swapped out.

No filter on my vehicle.

Just a quick update. Changed the pump and filter. Both were choked up. Haldex now works perfect.
