VRs spare wheel

Featured Replies

Hello Briskodians,

Had a punctured tyre today and upon checking the spare wheel is says it's limited to 50mph even though I cannot see any difference between the tyres, either is size or speed rating.

Is it safe to pass the speed limit noted on the wheel or is it not advisable?

Many thanks

This has been asked many times before.

Still dont know the answer why to be honest. Id personally say it would be safe to the tyres speed limit.

I think the sticker is there to cover them if there are "directional" tyres fitted..... one spare wheel may mean you have a directional tyre going backwards :)

The spare isnt directional.

think its something to do with it not being alloy like the road wheels???

If its got the same size tyre on it I cant see the difference.

prolly just to cover themselves from some crappy health and safety rules.....

prob something to do with the weight difference i imagine

Well because of a long story my dealer is putting my bridgestone spare tyre on one of my alloys as they're the same tyres. It's probably just some EU red tape nonsense.

I dont know the reason either, but i can assure you i gave it a pasting around some country roads / windy A roads and hit speeds of around 80mph and it didn't fly off, blow up, catch on fire, flash lights at me, tell my daddy, or kill me.

Later is more luck than anything, but i'd assume the sticker is purly for liability cover.

They weight of the steel is less than the alloy, would this off balance the car slightly? *shrugs*

I went well over 50 when I had my spare on without crashing, and made good use of some de-restricted B-Roads too, so take that as you will...

Because the rim hasnt been type approved above 50mph on the car, Its cheaper to slap a sticker on than it is to type approve a wheel, Or at least this is what i have heard ;)

It's in case the tyre fitted is directional, I asked this when I replaced the spare with an alloy, had comedy routine as below:

ME: why 50 MPH sticker?

Stealer: 'Cause tyre is directional and you could run it backwards.

ME: No it's not

Stealer: Come to my stealership and I'll show you:

Then at stealership,

Stealer: Oh yes, you're Michelin's aren't directional! But the Continental's are, like these here on the showroom car, oh no they're not directional either....

Thanks for all your replies and information will run it like a normal tyre but don't suppose I'll get above 50mph on my way home on Friday anyway!!
