Thanks,

I was thinking of doing the rear 20%, I had 30/35% on my previous Tiguan R Line, wished I went a bit darker.

Do you have any pictures?

what is the law on tinted front and side windows?i thought rightly or wrongly, tinted back windows were ok but not windscreen and front side windows.

Google is your friend on that.  Saves someone else doing a search.  Then for Taxis / private hire in difference local authority areas there are different requirements to be able to see in the rear of a car / vehicle.

In the UK the front side windows must allow 70% light transmission and the windscreen must allow 75%.

They tend to come from the factory already tinted to that level.

You can have any glass behind the B pillar as dark as you like.

If you go to a quality tinting place they will be able to measure your current tint and advise if you can go any darker.
My SEL has a pretty dark tint on the back, not sure I’d want it any darker as it would look a bit odd compared to the front windows.

It can be an expensive lesson if you are pulled over by the police and they check it, they can forcibly remove it by getting it peeled off there and then or issue a rectification notice, fine and possibly penalty points as well.

Ask yourself is it really worth it?

Do you want to be a target for the police and drive a pimp mobile?

I have no intention on tinting the front windows, or featuring on an episode of pimp my ride 🤣

One of the many reasons I went Octy vRS was to avoid going down the Focus ST styling route!

The original on octavia RS 2021 was 78% on front side windows. After the lightest film, wich is only protection from uv rays, on the end drops 7-8% to the original values. This is the picture on the end.

From what I’ve seen on a few recent VRS models, the factory rear glass usually sits around the mid-20% range once you account for the slight tint that’s already built into the privacy glass. If you felt that 30/35% on your Tiguan wasn’t dark enough, going with 20% on the rear of the VRS should give you that deeper look without hurting visibility, especially at night.

When I had mine done locally at OC Tint Solutions, they mentioned that a lot of VRS owners end up choosing a mix similar to what you’re considering 20% rear, 30% rear doors, and 50% on the fronts, mainly to keep things balanced and legal. They also shared a few comparison photos that helped me decide.

If you want to check out examples or get a better idea of how those percentages look in real conditions, their website has a gallery with a bunch of setups that are pretty close to what you're planning. It might help you visualise the difference before committing.

Hope that helps, 20% on the rear definitely seems like the sweet spot for the VRS.
