4 wheel alignment check necessary?

Featured Replies

OK,

Following a nice recommendation from Stuart(J) - i've got in touch with powerstation with reference to them doing an alignment check on my car.

One of their techie types said I should have had a four wheel alignment check as soon as the eibach lowering kit was fitted. Fair enough, I said, but their alignment check is

Get it done.

Could this be a symptom?

Slight wobbly feedback through brake peddle, on very light braking - hardly noticeable and totally gone when reasonable/hard braking is applied. No wobble at all on normal driving, smooth as it's ever been, given the fact it's a diesel.

However I see this sympton as to be a sign of brakes wear. aaarrgh. more damn expense! :(

Jason, not sure about the Fabia, but may be hard to adjust the rears. Powerstation are good, although they are a fair way from you (Cheltenham). Try somewhere local first, guess where I would suggest? ;) You need it set to factory settings (or if you can get them RS settings as that is lowered).

It'll save you money in the long run.

Oh and that sounds like discs.

p**tyre? :D

Cheltenham is only good for when I go to Jabba as I'll basically be driving past.

I'll give p**tyre a tinkle early next week and see what they say - I think I only need a tracking check, but the guy at powerstation seemed adamant I needed a full 4 wheel alignment check after lowering the car (talking about angles of struts and stuff).

Oh and that sounds like discs.

And if it is, they'll get progressively worse until you have to remachine the discs or (if you leave it too late) buy a whole new set :D

Have a nice weekend!!!

 Simon.

I'm just not looking forward to the early start. Hopefully the adrenaline of the flight will get me up without any trouble! :D (first flight for a few years now)

As for the discs - will a misaligned car really cause improper wear to discs and pads, as well as tyres?

Unrelated, IMHO. See, however, my stock "I know nothing about brakes" disclaimer

Great, Kwik-Fit are recruiting, you sound perfect :D

Jason, re the alignment check. Bite the bullet & get it done, otherwise you might bugger the new tyres up too.

Cars eat money, no point worrying about it ;)

Hell of a bullet though. :(

I'm hoping the Egg card you got me to buy (damn you! :D) will arrive soon, and I can put the new insurance on that, which will give me some breathing space. I dunno how I'm supposed to buy Xmas pressies now though.

BTW - This will be my last post before I nip off to the C.I.s. Enjoy the peace y'all!

Jason,

4 wheel alignment is always worth doing if you can stretch to it, Its worth getting it done on all cars from time to time, not just when you lower it or mod the suspension. The back I guess has to be way out before tyre wear shows up but if out a little it can adversly effect the handling. Check your rears to see if you have even wear, if you have less tread on the inside the Camber may be out.

If you go to Powerstation they will tell you how far out they have found some brand new cars to be

Powerstation are right as Camber etc all suffers when you lower the car & needs re setting. You are hopfully lucky with a 2 wheel drive car, I had to buy extra adjustable tie bars for the 4x4 to sort the camber (

How about DIY disk refinishing? Should be right up your street :D

I've done it once and it did work. Its eay and effective*

Jack car up

Use either axle stand or the devon method of breeze blocks

Remove wheels

Slide some fine glass paper between pads and disks

Get in car and drive at approx 20-30 mph for about 2-3 minutes

Remove glass paper

Refit wheels

Lower the car

DIY skimming at its finest :D

* Standard disclaimers apply :D

Jon, Yep thats dirt cheap & it as you said should work

Cheers guys.

Since I've got my new Egg card (sorry, not trying to promote them...) I can stick anything on it and not have to worry about it until next year. :D - So, I'm going to book myself in. I should think after the trials and tribulations of 47Ks of driving a full alignment check for
