Different size front and rear ?

Featured Replies

New front tyres needed on my '06 octy 2.0 this. Currently shod with 225/45/17, thinking of having new 225/5017 fitted, then putting them on the back when getting home, so running 225/50/17 on rear and 225/45/17 on front. Eventually going to 50's all round. Will I have any problems, traction control, ecu etc ?

Not a boy racer and never been a fan of low profiles, would rather have a quieter, comfier ride.

Thanks for any advice.

As far as the TPMS is concerned you just reset that with the tyres on and the pressures set.  The ABS will be perfectly fine.

I usually have the slightly bigger tyres on the front of FWD cars.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm thinking of doing the opposite, bigger tyres on the rear. Its an estate so taller tyres better for carrying loads, also gives it a bit if a nose down stance too.

225/50R17 raises the gearing by about 3.5% compared to 225/45R17.

225/50R17 is a more expensive tyre size than 225/45R17.

If you want more sidewall, consider 195/65R15 or 205/55R16.

225/50R17 94W (Euro Label B A 70dB) £90.75

Notice how the noise level and the price goes down as the tyre's width gets narrower...or at least in these sizes.

Thanks but don't really want to change the wheels. I think with 225/50/17 the speedo will be more accurate as well,  with 45s at an indicated 70, real speed (sat nav) is 66 !!

Speedos are legally required to not under read and to over read by less than 10%, so manufacturers usually calibrate them to over read by 5-7%.

Reading 70 at 66 is 6% so right in the middle of the expected range of over reading.
