Strange doubling up of music folders on Columbus

Featured Replies

I've a 2016 Superb with the Columbus head unit and I've used a 64GB SD card (a microSD + adapter) in slot 1 to play music since a few days after collecting it. Over time I've updated the contents of the card with no problem using a card reader on my Windows PC.

The last two or three times I've added new folders the Columbus has doubled them up.  For example:

Before

  • The Best of the Nolans
  • Timmy Mallet's Greatest Hits

I pull the card, copy across The Black & White Minstrels and put the card back in and expect three folders. Instead I get a duplicate of the new folder.

After

  • The Best of the Nolans
  • The Black & White Minstrels
  • The Black & White Minstrels
  • Timmy Mallet's Greatest Hits

If I select one of the Minstrels folders it shows the correct number of tracks but plays the first track twice, then the second twice etc.

At first I put this down to copying a folder and renaming it on the SD card afterwards so avoid this. However yesterday I copied a new folder over as named and today I'm doubled up again.

The only way to overcome this seems to be copy the music off the card (where it looks as intended - no duplicates), format the card and copy the music back. Then it's happy until the next time I add folders.

Any clues? I know that there are some limits (10,000 files?) but I'm only up to about 7,000 so don't think it's that. I'm guessing some sort of index/database corruption has occurred on the Columbus.

I've come across this too so watching with interest. 👍

I recently had a 32Gb usb stick where every track was playing twice. When I looked at the list, sure enough, there were two copies of each song.

I ejected the stick and stuck it in my computer. There were no duplicates. Reinserted the stick in the Columbus and the duplicates had disappeared. I supposed switching the unit off and on again without the stick in my have helped clear the memory? Dunno.

I worked in IT for 28 years. Of course, why didn't I think of turning it off and on again :D

Thinking back I tend to just jump in the car and eject the card without going into the menu and selecting the safe removal option (we're not running Windows 95 any more...) so I'll go through the full on/eject/off/insert on process and see what happens.

First time I've been in the car for a few days so I tried ejecting the card and reinserting it later. I still had a doubled-up folder so back to copy/format/copy back for me.

Check you haven't inadvertently generated or copied a shortcut onto the card, easily done when copying and pasting lots of items

Didn't get around to checking for a while but nope, looks clean when viewed on my PC.  Strangely I also had one doubled up folder which didn't then play each song twice.

Chuffed if I know. I'll just format the card each time I think 🙂
