Gearbox Compatibly QMM to MTE

Featured Replies

I have a 2016 2.0 DSG. I’ve purchased a used box from a breaker, they told me it was QMM, but they’ve supplied an MTE.

It appears it is from 2.0, but previous mark. Will it be compatible, or have the fecked up?

If its from a mk2 superb, then no it wont be compatible at all. The older superb isnt on a platform, new one is on MQB platform

Judging by the photo, no it wont fit the MQB superb you have!

Not a chance. Don’t even try

So the supplier of the box is insisting it came out of a Superb and will fit. They are VAG breakers.

the MTE box is sitting in the garage…

It does look identical….

I needs to prove the MTE box does not go into my car, or didn’t come from a Skoda Superb because they are saying it is compatible.

Any help?

Whether it fits or not is not the issue, the issue is - gearboxes have codes because there are differences - whether thats gearing, software, optional extras, different driveshaft cups, different selectors. Just because it came out of a superb doesnt mean it will work. On top of that the mk3 uses the gearbox as part of the immobiliser, the mk2 i dont believe does, the car will not start.

So I was faced with 2 options.

1. Fit it

2. Call supplier again.

I called the supplier to tell them it’s wrong again. I recorded the call, gave them the order number, which leads to their online quote for my request of a QMM gearbox. They of on call recording insisting the MTE box came out of a Superb and it fits, and me telling them they will need to cover fitting if it does not to which he agreed.  It’s recoded.

So they fitted it, and it’s throwing up  P1701 TCM Locked code as @ApertureS said would happen.

Now can this be flashed to work, or is it  literally the wrong box for this car?

I know, I know! But what was I supposed to do when they are forcing me to try it before taking it to the next step.

Literally the wrong box for the car. As the mk2 uses a different immobiliser system and an older mechatronic controller it won’t be able to be flashed with newer firmware as it’s not supported.

The only thing you could possibly try is using ODIS (no other tool will do it) and run the immobiliser service function to see if it resolves the issue - this will have to be done with the correct gearbox too, but I believe when the tool reads that it’s not the correct box it will straight up refuse to allow it and you’ll be stuck in this same situation.

They never said it came from a Mk2 Superb. They insist it was a 2017 which would make it Mk3, but I suspect an A3 a that’s the most common hit.

Yeah that needs the following running on it;

- Module 02 module replacement - new module

or if not that way it will need component protection, svm, immobiliser coding, adaptation reset, adaptation learn, drive adaptation learn

only then can you hope for the best.

all of this can only be done with odis, no aftermarket tool can do it, only genuine dealer software

A local guys recons can do it for £150. He’s advertising Odis.

I have a question for you. The Mechanic that he’s doing it, said that if the box was QMM, it would slot in.
After speaking to you, I believe that is not true due to component protection, is that correct? He was charging £200 to swap the box, But he has not affected in that it will need pairing with the car, which leads me to believe that he has never done a modern VAG box swap.

I completely agree with you. Sounds like your mechanic has no access to the required software or knows what he’s doing.

nothing on any car in the last 10 years that has electrical components is as simple as plug and play. Everything will need some kind of coding or calibration.

where are you based as I do have ODIS?

I’m in Birmingham mate. Found a local said he can do it for £150. Does that sound reasonable?

Yeah that’s about what I’d charge for the online side of it if he’s coming out to you.

He’s gonna meet me down the garage.

I hope this works. I’m a taxi driver and it’s killing me not working. This car has been nothing but a pain!

The cheeky garage guy said ‘I’ve done the job you asked me to do, you got the wrong gearbox so it needs coding’

I stumbled across it as it had VW specialist on the signage. Never again!

Name and shame them. Whether it is the correct code gearbox or not, it would never just fit and start. Even a brand new gearbox from the dealership never been in a car but with the exact code would need plugging in and coding correctly.

The other guy came out and got the gearbox moving. The car drives fine. I still feel that laggy feeling under 2000rpm though.

Now I have an assortment of codes that won’t clear on Carista, and a wiggly light that won’t go off, and my ACC & Start Stop don’t work!

Any suggestions?

To add to all of the above codes, I feel like I still have my old box. It’s still lags under 2000 rpm, & it still surges. It changes from 2-4 in very short ratios….

Has the Mechatronic gone on this one as well?

Well you do have an error related to boost control, so that might account for the lag under 2k rpm, as for all the other errors, i would assume those are related to poor coding.. As to the shifting issue, i not smart enought to know if its the mechatronic, or just a combination of all those errors..

It feels as it did pre gearbox change. So I’m assuming that boost issue is still there. I’ve just googled the code, and one guy solved it with good old turbo cleaner. I’ll try that first stop.

What were the before fault codes, and what was the before symptoms?
