Steering Wheel Clock Spring Repair Service

Featured Replies

If all of sudden you heard a clicking noise from your steering wheel with airbag light turned ON and your steering wheel controls and horn stopped working that means your steering wheel clock spring got broken.

You may struggle to find a new Clock Spring Squibs as they are in back order.

Confused by your posting not being what I expected from the title, are you offering a repair service, recommending one or asking for one?

I'm interested in your reply!

I took out my clockspring today and am trying to work out how to open it up to check the ribbon cable!

It's a VW original Valeo. There are 3 tabs inside the circular steering spline hole, which look like they bend to open for the top to come off, but which way!?

I don't want to break as it's a difficult/expensive to replace. Thanks Nobby

There are some excellent videos on YouTube.

I didn't find many on actually opening Skoda VWAG clocksprings (Valeo), other than this one on Youtube was reasonable, but no sound for most of it. Similar to my Mark 2 Superb Clockspring. https://youtu.be/UQNhCh2dv3o

I got mine open OK and there didn't appear to be anything wrong with mine, which is sort of good but also frustrating, not to find the cruise control fault. I have cleaned it up ready to fit back tomorrow and maybe the clean contacts will improve it.

Why do you think the cruise control fault could be to do with the clockspring?

Have you seen this YouTube video?

I have taken apart and cleaned the cruise control switch at the end of the stalk, no improvement. Took the whole stalk unit off and took that apart and cleaned, no improvement. A few months later I get a fault code saying control unit, so took that off (which I think is the same as clockspring?) to check. Any ideas please?

That's a good video, not seen that and the zero position looks different (same part number) so will check mine again. Thanks

Added stalk

You do realise that the cruise control does not go through the clockspring.

I think the postings containing the link to the person on Ebay repairing these clocksprings have been removed, possibly because it was connected to the OP, just as well as £100 seems very opportunistic for remaking 5 soldered contacts.

I will not hesitate to repair mine when it fails.

No I didn't realise that! Is there somewhere else I need to check on the stalk then please?

Uh!  No I didn't realise that!

My Fabia lost the cruise control and that was caused by a crack in the plastic vacuum pipe to the servo!!!!

Oh wow! That must have taken some finding and some sorting out.

I'll read up on that too and check that tomorrow. Thanks.

Failed clutch switch can take out cruise control, I think.
