Clunking and creaking from rear suspension

Featured Replies

When I drive on uneven roads I hear a clunking sound from what sounds like the rear passenger side. Car started doing this about 6 weeks ago after getting it back from being repaired after an incident with a deer that ended up bouncing off the front near side wheel area resulting in a new front shocker, wing, headlight and bumper skin.

I also hear creaking (since I bought the car last summer) when going over speed humps, but have read about others with this issue, so was going to get that looked at soon.

My last car (VW Passat B8) also made the clunking sound from drivers side rear.

Strangely enough mines has started doing the same!

Its ok over speed bump, its when the ground is uneven and the car is unsettled!

The creaking is most likely to be your top mounts when they replaced the front shocks!

@awesome I have noticed though it does seem to be quieter as it warms up. I don't even know if they replaced both front shocks but would expect so. It does sound to be coming from the rear though!

I would be interested to know what the typical cost of parts and time to do would be to sort it out so I know what to expect when it goes into the garage!

BTW your Superb has an insane amount of power, I bet that is fun!

Lol fun it is however watching the fuel needle drop in real time isn't!

I would say stage 1 is plenty as it's the best value for money and performance gains. Stage 3 is good but not worth the outlay tbh.

I may stage 1 at some point but not sure the OEM brakes are good enough to stop it! I had a stock E90 335d with OEM brakes a few years back and it stopped way better than the 280.

Upgrade the pads and you should be fine.

I'd check the front anti roll bar drop links for play in the ball joints. They wear out for a pass time right across the VW, Seat , Skoda range. Not particularly expensive if you're capable of changing them yourself you can do it for under £15.

Hey, any update as to what was causing those noises? I have a Mk3 superb 280, which is creaking over speed humps and making a knocking sound from the rear on un-even roads.

The rear clunking could be the rear drop links or bushes needing replacing.

The front creaking is very common and is caused by the top mount bushes, it's across the MQB range of cars.

The potential solution is to use Audi TTRS 8V top mount bushes.

So the vehicle has had 4 new springs and rear shocks to alleviate the sound but no luck.

Yeah, that's not going help! A way to check is apply loads grease to the front and rear anti-roll bushes and see if that makes a difference
