Wheel bearing replaced now Abs light on

Featured Replies

Hi all I bought a new wheel bearing online and today took my 1.4 petrol fabia to my local garage to have fitted on N/S front. When I went to pick car up the mechanic said he fitted it and now Abs light is on and and won't go off. His words were that he thinks it's something electrical with the bearing and that's all it is fine to drive. I'm now stumped after spending so much on this car with all sorts of work already been done car is due mot in May and I know it's not gunna pass now with abs light on any advice please and thank you.

Any chance your mechanic has left the ABS sensor unplugged?

Using VAG-COM/VCDS will be able to tell you where the fault is, as well.

I'm not sure would it be easy to see if I took the wheel off and thanks for reply

It's entirely possible that it's a coincidence and another, unrelated fault has appeared while the work was being done. A diagnostic plug in will confirm where the fault lies.

The simplest thing to check from a self help stand point is the electrical connection to the ABS sensor, take the wheel off and you will be able to check that the connector is seated properly.

If the fault wasn't present before the bearing went in then I suspect the sensor has possibly taken a knock or gotten damaged during the changing of the bearing. The only fix is a new sensor which isn't the end of the world.

The other, catastrophist diagnosis is that the mechanic has damaged the bearing while fitting it. If this turns out to be the case, they should sort it for you.

Thank you I will check in morning the abs connector if I can see anything wrong..

I just bet the mechanic used the wrong type of bearing press and damaged it during fitting.

Yes, you need 'Gen2' tooling to get in behind the hub face to press it in by the bearing outer, which isn't what happens if you just push the hub face.

Hatboy Harvey has a video on this, along with lots of others on YouTube if you search gen2, I think.

Did you buy the correct wheel bearing? Some mk1 fabias have ABS, others do not. They have different wheel bearings, the only difference being ABS type have the integrated ABS magnetic ring.

Link to the item you bought?

Ask your garage to show you what they used to fit it, and then explain how they didn't do it right if they don't show you the gen2 tooling. (e.g. Sealey VS7029 Front Wheel Bearing GEN2 Removal/Installation Kit 72mm 5051747698451 | eBay)

I expect it hasn't been fully inserted because it's hard to do so if pressing on the wrong part, or they've broken the ABS sensor, or both.

Pressing in by the hub face is also very likely to damage the bearings themselves, as the force is being transmitted through them.

The magnets aren't always amazing on cheap wheel bearings. We had it recently on a mini where a new bearing threw an abs fault that we couldn't find a reason for, in the end, we gave up and installed a better brand and it solved it.

Thanks this does seem like the case a job done incorrectly I will go see them Monday morning. Also upon recent inspection wheel when jacked does have a wobble 3-9 o'clock would this indicate poor work as it was doing this before bearing replacement and nothing else etc link's seem loose.

A wobble like that suggest TRE or console bush.
